To earn a 3-star rating with zero leaks on Tangled Turnpike (Heroic difficulty) in Fieldrunners 2 for iPad for iPad, you must merge the two separate ground spawn paths into a single winding corridor and concentrate your firepower around a central slow zone. Because Heroic increases enemy health pools and punishes split attention, you cannot afford to defend both entry lanes independently.

Bring a balanced selection of low-cost mazing structures, area-of-effect damage, crowd control, and anti-air defense:

  • Gatling Tower: Inexpensive structure used to block open lanes, route enemy movement, and deliver cost-effective early single-target damage.
  • Glue Tower: Slows enemy movement, compressing spread-out runners into tight groups to maximize splash damage.
  • Missile Tower: Long-range defense against aerial units and heavily armored vehicles.
  • Flame Tower or Gas Tower: Short-range area damage placed along bends to burn tightly grouped ground swarms.
  • Mortar Tower: Long-range artillery for dealing heavy explosive damage to clusters of armored units crawling through slow fields.

Building the Early Maze and Choke Point

Tangled Turnpike begins with two open ground entrances. Upgrading towers early leaves you without the funds needed to control runner movement, so prioritize extending path length over raw tower tier.

  1. Seal lane splits with basic Gatling Towers: Place level 1 Gatling Towers across open gaps near the entrance intersections. Leave one narrow, shared corridor open toward the center of the board so runners from both spawns redirect into the same lane.
  2. Establish the main turn: Extend the Gatling wall so the redirected lane takes a sharp 90-degree turn toward the middle of the map before heading toward the exit.
  3. Anchor the corner with a Glue Tower: Place a level 1 Glue Tower on the inside vertex of this sharp bend. Units rounding the corner will slow down, stacking following units directly on top of them.

Upgrading the Central Kill Zone

Once the shared route is established, shift spending into area damage and enhanced slowing effects at the main turn.

  • Upgrade Glue to Tier 2: As soon as multi-unit waves appear, elevate the central Glue Tower to tier 2. This expands the slowing radius and lengthens debuff duration, keeping runners under sustained fire.
  • Add a Flame or Gas Tower: Position a Flame or Gas Tower adjacent to the Glue Tower. The continuous burn melts standard infantry and light bikes as they struggle through the glue puddle.
  • Upgrade Corner Gatlings to Tier 2: If runners exit the turn with remaining health, upgrade existing Gatling Towers surrounding the turn to tier 2 rather than building new towers near the exit. Upgrading towers that already have full lane coverage yields higher damage uptime.

Threat Priorities and Tower Counters

Heroic waves alternate between dense runner swarms, flying units that ignore your maze layout, and heavily armored tanks. Position counters based on target behavior:

Mid-to-Late Wave Adjustments

Air units fly directly across the map toward the exit gate regardless of your maze. Build a Missile Tower near the center of the map before the first aerial wave arrives. Central placement allows its range bubble to engage approaching air units while providing long-range anti-armor support against ground tanks when no air targets are present.

For late-game waves featuring armored vehicles:

  1. Place a Mortar Tower behind your primary maze walls where its minimum range blind spot does not interfere with firing into the central glue puddle.
  2. Upgrade your primary Missile Tower to tier 3 to provide the high single-target burst required to down heavy boss vehicles.
  3. Set up an exit safety net by placing a tier 2 Glue Tower and a tier 2 Gatling Tower just ahead of the exit gate to finish off any stray units that survive the main kill zone.
  4. Preserve the maze layout. Never sell wall-forming Gatling Towers to finance expensive tier 3 upgrades unless you can immediately replace the blocked tile without breaking enemy pathing.
