To clear Book 3: The Axe's Heir Part 1 in Fire Emblem Shadows, anchor the narrow stone corridors of Notia using high-defense sword units, bait aggressive enemy axe wielders into attacking your frontline, and finish them off with ranged support.

Because Notia is a labyrinthine kingdom, standard open-field maneuvers will expose your fragile units to ambushes around blind corners. Advancing through the stage requires disciplined corridor spacing and baiting enemies on the enemy phase.

Corridor Formations and Role Spacing

The map restricts movement to one-tile and two-tile hallways. Splitting your forces down separate hallways dilutes your damage and risks dead ends, so advance as a single cohesive squad.

Place your sturdiest vanguard unit at the front to take blind turns and absorb incoming contact. Keep ranged units two tiles behind the frontline so they can strike over your lead unit without entering enemy melee ranges. Support and recovery units should follow directly behind your ranged attackers to heal chip damage before you trigger the next hallway encounter.

Unit RoleCorridor PlacementPrimary Responsibility in Notia
Physical Vanguard (Swords / Armors)1st tile (frontline bottleneck)Block corridor access, bait axe units, and absorb physical damage
Ranged Attackers (Bows / Tomes)2nd to 3rd tile (midline)Defeat baited enemies over the vanguard's shoulder safely
Support Units / Healers3rd to 4th tile (rear guard)Restore frontline HP and remove negative status effects
High-Mobility UnitsReserve (behind front ranks)Cover lateral breaches or clear isolated foes in open rooms

Countering Enemy Axe Fighters

Hostile forces in this chapter rely on high-might axe attacks capable of heavily damaging low-defense targets. Allowing them to initiate combat against your midline or rear guard will quickly break your formation.

  1. Check enemy movement and attack ranges before ending your turn.
  2. Park a high-defense sword wielder on the outermost edge of an axe enemy's range to exploit the weapon triangle advantage.
  3. Allow the enemy to expend their turn attacking your vanguard.
  4. On your following player phase, target the exposed axe unit with focused bow or tome fire to eliminate them before they can strike again.

Managing Intersections and Reinforcements

Notia's labyrinth contains multiple corridor junctions where stepping across room thresholds triggers secondary enemy patrols.

  • Halt before crossing thresholds: Stop right before entering open chambers to verify sightlines and enemy threat zones.
  • Form two-unit walls: In two-wide corridors, place two frontline units side-by-side to deny melee enemies access to your rear ranks.
  • Hold cavalry and fliers back: Confined indoor terrain penalizes high-mobility movement, so keep mounted units behind the frontline until bottlenecks open up.
  • Stay clear of unrevealed doors: Do not leave units adjacent to unopened doorways or side branches where enemy reinforcements can emerge.
  • Take consolidation turns: After clearing a corridor pack, hold your ground for a turn to heal your vanguard and reset positioning before pulling the next patrol.

Defeating the Chapter Boss

The stage concludes in a fortified command chamber where the chapter boss gains defensive territory bonuses.

Do not rush the command room immediately. Position your tank just inside the perimeter to bait the boss's accompanying guards out into the corridor where you can pick them off safely. Once the boss is isolated, initiate with a pre-buffed frontline unit to absorb the counterattack. Surround the boss on adjacent tiles to block escape routes, then finish the battle with armor-piercing arts and long-range magic.
