In Forge of Empires, animated city inhabitants are spawned primarily by standard residential houses, specialized production and military structures, and select limited-time event buildings. These walking figures, animals, and vehicles are purely cosmetic sprites. They do not alter your population count, resource output, or city happiness, but they require specific road connections and client display settings to appear.

Essential Requirements to View Inhabitants

Before inhabitants can walk around your settlement, your game client and city layout must meet three requirements:

  • City Animations Enabled: In the browser client, open the Settings menu using the gear icon in the lower-left corner and ensure City Animations is checked. On the mobile app, open Settings and verify the same toggle. Mobile devices may automatically disable this feature during battery-saver mode or low memory conditions.
  • Continuous Town Hall Connection: Pedestrians only spawn and walk on completed roads connected directly to your Town Hall. Disconnected structures or roads cut off from the Town Hall will not generate street walkers.
  • Graphic Quality Settings: If sprites fail to appear after enabling animations, verify that your graphics settings are set to high and refresh or clear the client cache.

Buildings That Generate Pedestrians and Traffic

Different building categories spawn distinct visual models based on the structure type and your current historical age.

Residential Buildings

Standard residential structures unlocked through the research tree are the main source of everyday foot traffic. Placing and connecting houses immediately populates nearby roads with era-appropriate citizens:

  • Early Ages (Bronze Age through Iron Age): Huts and villas spawn simple townspeople in tunics, barefoot villagers, and workers carrying water jugs or baskets.
  • Middle Ages through Renaissance: Streets populate with guards in armor, merchants, and period-dressed civilians.
  • Modern Era and Beyond: Pedestrians are joined by era-appropriate motorized transport, including cars, delivery vans, utility trucks, and futuristic hover-craft in the Space Ages.

Production and Military Structures

Certain supply buildings and military barracks deploy specialized workers rather than generic civilians:

  • Crafting and Production Sites: Buildings such as Blacksmiths, Tanneries, and Mills periodically send out laborers hauling materials or pushing handcarts along adjacent roadways.
  • Military Facilities: Barracks and compounds occasionally dispatch small squads, mounted scouts, or mechanical units to patrol nearby connected roads before they return inside.
  • Disconnecting these buildings from the road network removes their associated workers from the streets.

Event and Cultural Buildings

Limited-time event prizes and special historical buildings feature custom animated models that cannot be unlocked through the standard research tree.

Road Types and Pathfinding Rules

Inhabitant movement relies on the layout and width of your street grid:

  • Single-Lane Roads (1x1): Accommodate foot pedestrians, laborers, and small livestock. They cannot support motorized vehicles.
  • Two-Lane Roads (2x2): Required for late-game industrial, modern, and futuristic structures. These roads introduce dedicated traffic lanes where cars and trucks travel at faster visual speeds than walking citizens.
  • Grid Layouts vs. Dead Ends: Inhabitants wander across interconnected junctions. Building continuous road loops distributes pedestrian traffic evenly across your settlement. Long dead-end paths cause inhabitants to cluster, turn around repeatedly, and create visual bottlenecks.

Managing Performance Lag

Large numbers of animated sprites increase processing demands on your device. High-density cities featuring dozens of animated event buildings and multi-lane road networks can suffer frame-rate drops during intensive activities such as Guild Battlegrounds or Quantum Incursions.

If you encounter performance stuttering or input lag during mass collections or battles, open Settings and toggle off City Animations. You can re-enable the setting at any time to restore ambient street life.
