To build an effective HP-scaling hero in Fortress Saga, replace standard Attack (ATK) attributes with Max HP percentage, Crit Rate, and Crit Damage across all equipment and Potential slots. HP-scaling heroes calculate their active skill burst directly from their total health pool rather than their ATK stat, allowing defensive investments to double as offensive scaling.
How HP-Scaling Damage Works
Standard damage dealers calculate both auto-attacks and skill bursts from raw ATK. HP-scaling heroes such as Amber calculate the baseline damage of their active abilities from a percentage of their own Max HP.
- ATK stats offer negligible value: Raw ATK and team-wide ATK buffs do not meaningfully improve the skill output of an HP carry.
- Crit stats remain fully effective: HP-based skill hits can critically strike. Stacking Crit Rate and Crit Damage multiplies the damage generated by your total health pool.
- Percentage scaling outpaces flat stats: Because gear and promotion multipliers scale base numbers, HP percentage (HP%) provides substantially higher late-game returns than flat HP bonuses.
Best Gear Stats and Equipment Priority
Filter all gear upgrades to maximize health and offensive multipliers. Secure adequate HP% before hunting for pure Crit Damage so that your hero has a large baseline pool to multiply.
| Equipment Slot | Recommended Primary Stat | Target Substats | Focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weapon / Core | Flat HP or Crit Rate | HP%, Crit Damage, Crit Rate | Skill scaling and strike consistency |
| Armor / Defense | HP% | Crit Rate, Crit Damage, Flat HP | Core health pool and durability |
| Accessories | HP% or Crit Damage | Crit Rate, HP%, Damage Reduction | Multiplier balance and mitigation |
| Runes | HP% Multipliers | Crit Chance, Effect Resistance | Boss survival and pool expansion |
Potential Rolls and Fortress Research
When customizing an HP-scaling unit through the Potential system, reroll any slot that lands on ATK or ATK%. These stats consume valuable slot budget without strengthening the hero's primary skill triggers.
- Prioritize Max HP%: Lock in pure Max HP% rolls on your main Potential slots to elevate baseline skill damage.
- Add Critical Stats: Use secondary Potential slots for Crit Rate until strike triggers are consistent, then invest into Crit Damage.
- Upgrade Account Research: In the Fortress Research tree, invest consistently into the Hero HP and Hero Survivability nodes alongside cannon upgrades. Permanent base HP increases amplify every percentage multiplier equipped on your heroes.
Hero Roles and Team Positioning
An HP-scaling carry belongs on the frontline of your fortress deck. Aggressive forward placement ensures the unit absorbs early incoming attacks to cycle abilities quickly while grouping enemies for area-of-effect skill hits.
- Primary Carry (Amber): Functions as both an anchor and a burst carry. Amber absorbs frontline pressure and converts her massive HP pool into wide-range area damage.
- Frontline Bruisers: Secondary brawlers equipped with personal barriers or damage reduction help divert crowd control and aggro away from the fortress hull.
- Vitality Supports: Pair HP carries with healers and support units that provide percentage-based healing, barriers derived from maximum health, or raw damage reduction rather than flat ATK buffers.
- Fortress Maintenance: Stray area-of-effect attacks and boss abilities can still hit your fortress directly. Maintain your fortress repair and defense systems so incoming siege damage does not defeat you while your frontline remains intact.
