To perform interactions in Gothic Classic—including picking up herbs, opening chests, looting fallen bodies, or operating workbenches—position your character directly in front of the object, hold down the Action key, and press the Forward directional key simultaneously. Practice this combination on static objects in the starting area before venturing into hostiles or major settlements.

Executing Object and Environmental Interactions

In interaction logic, single-key prompts do not exist. If your character fails to pick up an item or open a container, the issue is usually spacing or input timing.

• Positioning: Walk directly up to the target until your character faces it closely. Being even slightly out of range prevents the interaction signal from registering.
• Key Combination: Press and hold the Action key first, then tap Forward while maintaining your hold on the Action key.
• Workbenches and Containers: The same Action + Forward key combination is required for opening doors, using anvils or cooking pots, and stripping gear from defeated enemies. Ensure you check item descriptions in your inventory, as some crafting stations require specific tools equipped beforehand.

Early-Game Exploration and Navigation Strategies

Direct combat is extremely punishing for low-level characters. Treat early gameplay as a navigation and resource-gathering run rather than a fighting tour. Your primary early milestone is reaching safe zones, such as the Old Camp, to contact merchants and quest-givers.

• Bypassing Hostile Enemies: Do not attack creatures in the starting valley immediately. Stick to main paths and head straight toward major settlements.
• Exploiting Elevation: If hostile NPCs or predators chase you, climb onto ledges, crates, or high rocks. The enemy pathfinding struggles with high ground, giving you a safe position to scout alternative routes or break target pursuit.
• NPC Detection and Faction Favor: Stealing items within the direct line of sight of NPCs turns them aggressive instantly. Save your game frequently, test NPC sightlines cautiously, and complete non-combat tasks around the Old Camp to earn trust and ore, the primary currency for buying better gear.

Real-Time Inventory Preparation

Opening your inventory does not pause Gothic Classic. Swapping items or consuming remedies happens while the world moves around you.

• Quick Recovery: Keep healing items and food organized near the top of your inventory list or assigned to direct hotkeys to use them quickly during emergency situations.
• Camera Adjustments: If movement or targeting feels awkward, adjust camera sensitivity in the settings menu to better manage character direction when interacting with items in tight spaces.
