To perform environmental interactions or engage in combat in Gothic Classic, you must hold the designated Action button while pressing a directional movement key. Unlike modern role-playing games that feature single-button interaction prompts, Gothic Classic uses a manual two-key input system for every action, including looting items, opening chests, climbing ladders, and striking enemies.

World Interaction Rules and Input Execution

Interacting with the world requires correct character alignment and weapon state before entering commands:

• Sheath Your Weapon: Ensure your weapon is put away. Carrying a drawn weapon prevents you from opening containers, picking up items, or climbing.
• Direct Alignment: Stand directly in front of the target item, chest, or ladder.
• Input Combination: Press and hold the Action button, then press Forward (or the corresponding directional key) to complete the action.

If an interaction fails, step back, re-align your character directly with the object, and confirm your weapon is sheathed.

How Combat Targeting and Strikes Work

Combat relies on target lock-on and rhythmic input timing rather than rapid button mashing:

1. Draw Weapon: Press the draw weapon key to engage combat mode and activate target locking.
2. Lock Target: Face your opponent until your character locks onto the specific target.
3. Execute Attacks: Hold the Action button and press Forward to perform a forward attack, or press Left or Right while holding Action to perform side strikes.
4. Time Sequential Combos: Press the directional input at the precise moment a swing completes to execute continuous attack sequences. Mashing buttons disrupts the combination chain.

Positioning takes priority over reaction speed. Turning away from your target or misaligning your character breaks target lock and leaves you vulnerable to counterattacks.

Managing NPC Schedules and World Persistence

NPCs in the prison colony follow persistent daily routines independently of your character:

• Routine Tracking: Characters move between working, sleeping, and socializing on set schedules. Observe these routines to find moments when guards leave doors unmonitored or when key NPCs are isolated.
• Environmental Memory: Dropping items or committing infractions persists in the game engine. Hostile reactions from guards or faction members do not reset automatically; manage your aggression and positioning around camp territories to avoid permanent hostility.
