To win fights against multiple enemies in Gothic Classic, isolate individual targets by using lock-on positioning to keep your primary target between you and other attackers while funneling the group into narrow bottlenecks. Avoid long attack combos or standing still; rely on single interrupt strikes and quick evasions to control the pace of combat.

Using Lock-On to Block Enemy Attackers

Holding the action key locks your combat focus onto a single target. In group encounters, your target serves as a physical shield against other incoming attackers.

• Block sightlines: Move laterally so your current locked-on target stays directly between you and the rest of the enemy group.
• Limit aggression: Because the game's target logic struggles to process simultaneous attacks from overlapping angles, enemies forced behind your target will pause rather than swarm you.
• Focus damage: Deal damage exclusively to the front target while using their body to block the movement of secondary enemies.

Controlling Space with Bottlenecks

Fighting multiple foes in wide-open spaces allows the AI to circle around your blind spots. Force enemies into narrow terrain where their numbers provide no benefit.

1. Retreat to narrow terrain: Move toward doorways, dungeon corridors, tight passes, or walls to eliminate flanking routes.
2. Force single-file lines: Position yourself at the end of a bottleneck so only the lead opponent can attack.
3. Apply the one-in, one-out rhythm: Step forward into melee range, land a strike to stagger the lead enemy, and immediately step back out of reach.

Interrupting Attacks and Escaping Stunlocks

Taking hits while outnumbered leads to staggered hit-stuns and fatal stunlock loops. Managing your attacks and evasions keeps you mobile.

• Time your interrupt strikes: Watch your locked-on target's attack animation. Striking right as they start their swing cancels their attack and causes hit-stun.
• Favor single strikes over combos: Avoid committing to extended attack chains when surrounded. Single, deliberate hits prevent you from getting trapped in long attack animations.
• Break stunlock loops: If hit, do not attack back immediately or attempt to turn around and run. Wait until your character finishes flinching, then sidestep or dodge to break proximity before re-engaging.
• Manage healing safety: Mid-combat healing item animations leave you completely open to attacks. Focus on spatial positioning and dodging to conserve health rather than taking damage to trade hits.
