Gothic Classic LP Guide: How to Spend Learning Points

To survive combat in Gothic Classic, spend your early Learning Points (LP) strictly on a single offensive attribute until you clear enemy armor thresholds. Avoid spending points on utility skills like lockpicking or stealth during the initial levels, as spreading points across multiple attributes leaves you unable to deal meaningful damage to armored targets.

How Armor and Damage Thresholds Work

Gothic Classic uses a strict armor reduction system that punishes split stats. Damage against an enemy depends on your weapon's base damage combined with your attribute modifier, balanced directly against the target's protection value:

Above the Protection Threshold: When total damage exceeds enemy protection, you deal full net damage.
Below the Protection Threshold: When total damage fails to clear enemy protection, your attacks hit for minimal chip damage.

Focusing entirely on your primary stat gets your damage past this protection barrier early. Once you clear this threshold, combat encounters end much faster, allowing you to farm experience and accumulate more LP efficiently.

Choosing a Combat Specialization

Avoid splitting LP between Strength, Dexterity, and Mana simultaneously. Select one primary archetype early in your playthrough and direct your points into its required stats:

Finding Trainers and Planning LP Expenditures

Stat increases and new skill tiers do not unlock automatically upon leveling up. You must travel to specific NPC trainers in the world and pay both LP and gold to raise attributes or unlock combat animations.

Check your totals before traveling: Confirm you have both the required gold and unused LP saved up before making the trip to a trainer.
Plan safe travel routes: Trainers often reside in camps or dangerous zones. Traveling to a master without enough currency or points wastes time and exposes you to high-level threats unnecessarily.
Hold LP for stat requirements: If you find high-tier equipment in your current area, hold your unspent LP until you have enough points to meet its stat requirement all at once.
