To run the combat-scaling Dragon build in Hearthstone Battlegrounds, stabilize on Tavern Tier 4 and position Persistent Poet adjacent to combat-buffing Dragons. Rather than spending heavy gold cycling Battlecry minions with Tier 6 Kalecgos, this archetype turns transient combat stats into permanent scaling at the end of each round.
Core Minion Roster
The composition relies on units found on Tavern Tiers 2 through 4, allowing you to build a scaling board without rushing to higher tiers.
| Minion | Tavern Tier | Function in Build |
|---|---|---|
| Persistent Poet | Tier 4 | Keeps combat enchantments permanently on adjacent Dragons. |
| Tarecgosa | Tier 3 | Retains combat enchantments permanently without needing adjacency. |
| Prized Promo-Drake | Tier 4 | Grants Start of Combat attack and health to adjacent minions per Dragon. |
| Amber Guardian | Tier 3 | Grants Start of Combat stats and Divine Shield to another friendly Dragon. |
| Nether Drake | Tier 2 | Provides early baseline attack scaling across your Dragon board. |
Tarecgosa naturally keeps combat enhancements, which frees up one adjacent slot beside Persistent Poet for another priority unit like Prized Promo-Drake.
Tavern Curve and Leveling Milestones
Do not push to Tavern Tier 5 or 6 once the core engine is active. This build achieves its peak efficiency on Tier 4, where the shared pool contains both Persistent Poet and Prized Promo-Drake.
- Turns 1–4 (Early Turns): Buy high-tempo pairs, economy minions, or early Dragon anchors like Nether Drake.
- Turn 5 (7 Gold): Upgrade to Tavern Tier 3 on curve.
- Turn 7 (9 Gold): Upgrade to Tavern Tier 4 if your hero health is stable above 30.
- Tier 4 Milestone: Stop leveling. Spend your gold rolling on Tier 4 to find Persistent Poet and triple your existing copies of Tarecgosa and Prized Promo-Drake.
Staying on Tier 4 avoids the high health loss often suffered when trying to assemble an APM-heavy Kalecgos and Brann Bronzebeard board. Reinvest your gold into tavern spells that offer immediate combat buffs, Divine Shields, or Taunt, while searching for triples to solidify your stats.
Board Positioning Order
Placement directly governs whether buffs trigger and whether Persistent Poet retains them. Arrange your board from left to right using this sequence:
- Slot 1 (Amber Guardian or Divine Shield Attacker): Strikes first to remove opposing Divine Shields and trigger its Start of Combat shield onto an ally.
- Slot 2 (Tarecgosa): Serves as your primary offensive carry, attacking early to trade while its in-combat stat boosts peak.
- Slot 3 (Persistent Poet): Sheltered in the center to survive early enemy hits while applying its adjacency retention aura to Slot 2 and Slot 4.
- Slot 4 (Prized Promo-Drake): Sits adjacent to Persistent Poet to retain stats while buffing its neighbors at the start of combat.
- Slots 5 and 6 (Support Dragons): Additional Dragon bodies that raise the multiplier for Prized Promo-Drake's buff.
- Slot 7 (Utility or Taunt Minion): A defensive unit positioned far right to absorb initial enemy attacks away from your key scalers.
Late-Game Adjustments
As your Dragons scale into massive health pools, opponents frequently counter with Scam cards such as Leeroy the Reckless or Venomous Murlocs. Adjust your board to protect your primary carries:
- Absorb Poison and Leeroy hits: Give your lowest-value utility Dragon Taunt and place it on the far right. Opponents targeting your Taunted units will expend their instant-kill effects on expendable bodies instead of Tarecgosa.
- Maintain Divine Shields: Keep Amber Guardian on the board so your primary carry receives Divine Shield, preventing lethal one-hit trades if the opponent attacks first.
- Prevent Cleave damage: If facing Beasts or Mechs with wide-cleaving attacks, never place Persistent Poet directly next to your Taunted minion. Keep at least two non-essential minions between your Taunted unit and Persistent Poet so your scaling engine survives every round.
