To execute a Cultist S'thara board in Hearthstone Battlegrounds, you must ensure that exactly one heavily buffed Demon with Taunt dies before any other friendly Demon. Positioning non-Demon utility minions ahead of your carry allows them to attack and open board space. Placing Cultist S'thara and Titus Rivendare safely in the backline then triggers multiple exact-stat resummons of your primary powerhouse.

How Cultist S'thara and Titus Rivendare Interact

Cultist S'thara is a Tier 6 Demon (11/3) with innate Stealth and a Deathrattle: Summon your first Demon that died this combat. It keeps its enchantments. Unlike basic resurrection effects, S'thara revives the fallen Demon with all accumulated combat stats, Divine Shield, and Reborn modifications intact.

Titus Rivendare multiplies this Deathrattle:

  • A regular Titus Rivendare triggers S'thara twice, summoning two full-stat copies.
  • A Golden Titus Rivendare triggers S'thara three times, summoning three copies.

Because Cultist S'thara starts with Stealth, enemy attacks cannot target it early in combat. This guarantees your frontline carry absorbs hits and registers as the first friendly Demon death of the round.

Preventing the Token Trap

Cultist S'thara tracks combat deaths strictly by order of occurrence. If any incidental Demon dies before your carry, S'thara duplicates that minion instead, nullifying your endgame scaling.

To prevent low-stat duplications:

  • Designate a single Demon carry: Build stats on one primary target, such as an Ur'zul or Famished Felbat, and apply Taunt exclusively to that unit.
  • Remove token-spawning Demons: Sell minions like Imp Gang Boss, Ring Matron, or Voidlord, as their Deathrattle spawns will pollute the graveyard if they die first.
  • Keep utility units non-Demon: Fill the rest of your board with tech or scam cards from other minion types so their deaths never interfere with S'thara's resurrection pool.

Board Positioning and Slot Management

Titus Rivendare cannot summon minions onto a full board. If seven friendly units are alive when Cultist S'thara dies, Titus's extra triggers fizzle. You must arrange your attack sequence so expendable units die and create empty board slots before S'thara triggers.

Advanced Synergies

  • Reborn on S'thara: Applying Reborn to Cultist S'thara brings it back with 1 Health after its first death. While it loses Stealth upon returning, its second death triggers Titus Rivendare again, generating another wave of duplicate carries if board space permits.
  • Teron Gorefiend Hero Power: Rapid Reanimation can target your primary Demon carry at the start of combat. This destroys the minion immediately, registering it as the first Demon death and freeing a board slot before the opponent makes an attack.
  • Tavern-Phase Duplication: Combining your carry with Kel'Thuzad during the recruit phase allows you to destroy and respawn base copies to scale permanent board stats across rounds.

Countering Enemy Tech

Opponents often field specific tech cards to disrupt this positioning:

  • Sin'dorei Straight-Shot: If the opponent attacks first with Sin'dorei Straight-Shot, it removes Taunt and Reborn from your carry. You can mitigate this by running high-initiative Windfury openers to snipe the Sin'dorei, or by placing a non-Demon minion with Divine Shield and Taunt ahead of your carry to absorb the hit.
  • Cleave Attackers: Cards like Foe Reaper 4000 or Cave Hydra can damage adjacent units when attacking a Taunt minion. Never place Cultist S'thara or Titus Rivendare directly next to your primary Taunted Demon. Position non-essential buffer minions in the middle slots so cleave damage does not reach your Deathrattle engines.
