To beat opponents with massive, hundred-stat minions in Hearthstone Battlegrounds, stop investing in linear stat buffs and pivot to an unconditional removal "scam" board. Instead of attempting to match an opponent's exponential scaling, you deploy units that bypass stat totals entirely by destroying attackers, setting stats to base values, or applying Venomous.
Hold your scam pieces on your bench until you have assembled a complete lineup. Swapping units onto your active board piecemeal destroys your mid-game tempo and leaves you vulnerable to early elimination.
When to Pivot
Initiate an endgame scam transition only when your scouting confirms two specific lobby conditions:
- Uncatchable stat scaling: The lobby leader has scaled several minions beyond the reach of your composition's mathematical growth, such as massive Quilboar, Elementals, or Dragons.
- A tall opponent lineup: The opposing board relies on a few colossal minions rather than wide token swarms, Deathrattle reborns, or Divine Shield Mech resets.
Begin purchasing counter-units at Tavern Tier 5 and Tier 6 while your current board remains competitive. Stockpile your pieces on the bench across two to three rounds, preserving your Health and Armor. Once you have acquired your removal units and their board-clearing utility tech, sell your obsolete stat minions and execute the entire transition in a single decisive turn.
Core Scam and Removal Units
Scam compositions trade one-for-one or better against any target regardless of enemy Attack or Health totals.
| Minion | Combat Function | Ideal Support | Primary Weakness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tunnel Blaster | Deals 3 damage to all minions on Deathrattle | Titus Rivendare | Board-wide self-damage |
| Leeroy the Reckless | Destroys the minion that kills him | Taunt, Reborn | Low-stat tokens, Divine Shield |
| Transmuted Bramblewitch | Sets target's Attack and Health to 3/3 on attack | Windfury | Cleave damage, Divine Shield |
| Operatic Belcher | Destroys non-shielded targets via Venomous | Taunt, Divine Shield | Pre-combat damage, Divine Shield |
| Cultist S'thara | Summons the first friendly Demon that died | Titus Rivendare | Disrupted death order, full board |
Board Positioning and Attack Order
Because scam units have low base Health, allowing an enemy Cleave or Windfury minion to strike first can dismantle your board before your effects trigger. Arrange your lineup from left to right to strip protective buffs before committing your removal pieces:
- Slot 1 (Tunnel Blaster): Attacks first to trigger its Deathrattle immediately. This wipes out opposing Divine Shields and eliminates low-Health tokens before your primary units trade.
- Slots 2 and 3 (Transmuted Bramblewitch & Leeroy the Reckless): Strike early to delete the opponent's largest Taunts and primary carries while enemy shields are down.
- Slots 4 and 5 (Operatic Belcher & Secondary Tech): Handle secondary trades using Venomous to eliminate remaining large targets.
- Slot 6 (Taunted Buffer): Absorbs counterattacks to protect your backline value engines.
- Slot 7 (Titus Rivendare or Cultist S'thara): Stays tucked in the far right to remain protected from Cleave damage and multiply friendly Deathrattles.
Scam Board Limitations
Do not pivot to a scam board against token-dense compositions, such as Deathrattle Undead or Beast swarms. Trading Leeroy the Reckless or a Venomous hit into a low-tier token yields poor combat value and causes your low-Health board to collapse against swarm damage. Only commit to this pivot when facing concentrated, tall boards that cannot recover from unconditional trades.
