To duplicate minions with Arch-Lich Kel'Thuzad in Hearthstone Battlegrounds, place Kel'Thuzad to the immediate right of an Undead minion that possesses the Reborn keyword, and end your recruitment turn with no more than six minions on your warband.

At the end of your turn, Kel'Thuzad destroys the target, Reborn spawns a copy into your open board slot, and Kel'Thuzad resummons the original minion. This interaction creates an extra copy of your key Undead every turn, generates Golden triples without rolling, and triggers shop-phase Deathrattles.

How the Duplication Sequence Works

Arch-Lich Kel'Thuzad is a Tier 6 Undead minion with an end-of-turn effect: he destroys the Undead to his immediate left and resummons it. The duplication occurs because the game engine resolves the Reborn keyword before completing Kel'Thuzad's resummon effect:

  1. Destruction: Kel'Thuzad initiates his trigger and destroys the friendly Undead to his left.
  2. Reborn Trigger: Because the target minion had Reborn, its keyword activates immediately upon death, summoning a 1-health copy onto the board.
  3. Resummon Completion: Kel'Thuzad's card text finishes resolving by resummoning the original minion at its full baseline stats.

Because both the Reborn copy and the resummoned original remain on your warband, you finish the shop phase with two copies of that minion. If you execute this sequence again on the next turn, you obtain a third copy, which automatically combines them into a Golden triple.

Board Space and Positioning Requirements

The Kel'Thuzad engine fails if you do not manage your board space and card positions before the tavern timer expires.

  • Maintain an empty board slot: You must have six or fewer minions when the turn ends. If your board has seven minions, Kel'Thuzad will destroy the target, but Reborn will fizzle due to a lack of board space. Kel'Thuzad will still resummon the original minion, leaving you with only one copy and no gained value.
  • Place Kel'Thuzad to the right: Kel'Thuzad strictly targets the Undead unit to his immediate left. If Kel'Thuzad is placed in the far-left slot or adjacent to a non-Undead unit, the effect does not activate.
  • Check shop order before combat: Reorganizing your board for combat priority can accidentally leave a high-value tech unit or utility engine to the left of Kel'Thuzad. Confirm your sacrifice target is to his left before the countdown timer hits zero.

Best Sacrifice Targets

Target selection determines whether you scale permanent tavern stats or build massive combat boards:

MinionInteractionPrimary Value
Moroes, Steward of DeathInnate Reborn; Deathrattle permanently grants stats to friendly UndeadBest target for tavern-phase permanent stat scaling
Sister DeathwhisperPassive scaling whenever Reborn triggersRapidly generates Golden copies to multiply board buffs
Champion of the PrimusScales attack and health across battle phasesBuilds large mid-game tempo stats
Eternal SummonerSummons Eternal Knights on DeathrattleEndgame cloning target for wide board presence

Moroes, Steward of Death is the most reliable baseline target because his Deathrattle provides permanent stat buffs. Because Kel'Thuzad triggers this Deathrattle during the shop phase, the stats awarded to your Undead persist through future rounds rather than resetting after combat.

Minions without innate Reborn—such as Sister Deathwhisper or Eternal Summoner—must be granted Reborn via tavern spells or magnetic enchantments before placing them next to Kel'Thuzad. Once given Reborn, duplicating Sister Deathwhisper allows you to field multiple copies or build a Golden version, multiplying combat buffs whenever any Reborn minion dies.

Stat Multipliers: Titus Rivendare and Drakkari Enchanter

You can amplify the value of each sacrifice step with neutral support minions:

  • Titus Rivendare: Titus causes Deathrattles to trigger an extra time (or twice if Golden). When Kel'Thuzad destroys Moroes, Titus multiplies Moroes's permanent stat distribution, granting high board-wide stats before combat begins.
  • Drakkari Enchanter: Drakkari triggers end-of-turn effects twice. If you have enough empty board space, Kel'Thuzad will attempt his sacrifice and resummon sequence twice.
  • Golden Arch-Lich Kel'Thuzad: The Golden version of Kel'Thuzad resummons two copies of the destroyed minion instead of one, speeding up board generation and tripling cycles.

Managing Vulnerabilities and Endgame Transitions

While powerful, relying on Kel'Thuzad carries two distinct tactical drawbacks:

  1. Mid-Game Vulnerability: Levelling aggressively to Tier 6 to find Kel'Thuzad sacrifices tempo. Furthermore, maintaining an open board slot means you fight combat rounds with six minions instead of seven. Facing high-tempo or cleave-heavy warbands during this setup phase can result in taking significant damage before your Golden units come online.
  2. Late-Game Stat Limits: Kel'Thuzad himself has modest combat stats and lacks protective keywords. Once your key carries are fully tripled and your warband has scaled sufficiently, consider selling Kel'Thuzad in the final rounds. Replacing him with protective tech choices, Divine Shield minions, or targeted counters prevents his weak combat body from becoming a liability against lethal endgame opponents.
