To win with Big Rainbow Death Knight in Hearthstone, trade proactively in the early game to build corpses, reset wide enemy boards with mid-game removal, and close out matches by deploying discounted high-cost threats.
Unlike standard Rainbow builds that rely on token floods or burning opponents down with Climactic Necrotic Explosion, this archetype uses single-rune defensive spells from Blood, Frost, and Unholy to exhaust aggressive decks before dropping game-ending minions.
| Phase | Primary Objective | Key Cards |
|---|---|---|
| Early Game (Turns 1–3) | Build corpses and contest early minions | Miracle Salesman, Mining Casualties |
| Mid-Game (Turns 4–6) | Clear wide boards and discount threats | Corpse Explosion, Maw and Paw, Sickly Grimewalker |
| Late Game (Turns 7+) | Deploy giant threats and steal win conditions | Reska, the Chained; The Primus; Yogg-Saron |
Early Game: Managing Corpses and Board Presence
Your first three turns focus on life preservation and corpse generation rather than dealing face damage.
- Play early board contest tools immediately: Drop Miracle Salesman on Turn 1 or Mining Casualties on Turn 2 to trade against opposing low-cost minions. Mining Casualties creates three bodies across two actions, immediately banking two corpses when they die.
- Expend cheap spells to preserve health: Use cards like Runes of Darkness or Defrost to clear opposing boards before incoming damage escalates.
- Conserve your corpse pool: High-impact board clears require an adequate corpse reserve. Avoid spending corpses on minor tempo buffs if you expect to face a wide enemy board on upcoming turns.
Mid-Game: Stabilizing and Setting Up Tempo Swings
Turns 4 through 6 act as the bridge from pure survival to board control.
- Deploy Maw and Paw on Turn 4: This minion forces the opponent to trade their board or spend direct removal. Leaving it alive grants bonus maximum health and additional corpses each turn.
- Clear swarms with Corpse Explosion or Sickly Grimewalker: Trigger Corpse Explosion against wide boards to wipe out token swarms. Pair Sickly Grimewalker with small trading minions to clear tall threats efficiently.
- Discount Reska, the Chained: Reska's mana cost decreases every time a friendly minion dies. Trade off your smaller minions and ghouls across Turns 4 and 5 so Reska can be played alongside removal spells on subsequent turns.
Late Game: Threat Sequencing and Matchup Plans
Transition from reactive survival to continuous board pressure once your mana pool opens up.
Sequencing Late-Game Threats
- Adapt The Primus to the board state: Do not play The Primus onto an empty board purely for tempo. Use the Blood ability to consume a large enemy threat and gain maximum health. Use Frost to draw cards and discount them, or Unholy to summon defensive taunt minions.
- Target key anchors with steals: Save Reska and Yogg-Saron effects to steal large enemy Deathrattle minions or primary win conditions.
- Drop threats in pairs: Play your discounted behemoths alongside spot removal to prevent opponents from answering your board efficiently.
Matchup Strategy: Aggro vs. Control
- Against Fast Aggro: Focus entirely on resource starvation. Trade aggressively with your hero power ghoul and keep your health total out of burst range. Once you stabilize the board behind high-health minions or The Primus, aggressive decks deplete their hands and struggle to bypass your defenses.
- Against Slow Control: Take the offensive role. Stagger your large threats one at a time to bait out single-target removal spells like Shield Slam or Brawl. Forcing your opponent to spend hard removal every turn eventually exhausts their hand, allowing your remaining large threats to finish the game.

This helped me understand early game much better.
Nice guide. I am checking the other Hearthstone articles next.
Can you add more details about early game in a future update?
This guide answered the exact question I had.
