Open every Catch-Up Pack in your inventory before opening any standard or expansion card packs. Catch-Up Packs in Hearthstone award up to 50 cards per pack based on how few cards you currently own from five prior Standard expansions. Opening other packs first raises your collection completion percentage prematurely, which directly lowers the number of cards your Catch-Up Packs will yield.
Recommended Pack Opening Order
To maximize the total card volume added to your collection, open your packs in this sequence:
- Open All Catch-Up Packs First: Your collection percentages are at their lowest before you open anything else. Opening Catch-Up Packs first guarantees the highest possible card yield across all five eligible expansions.
- Open Standard and Class Packs Second: Standard packs draw from the entire active Standard pool. Opening these after Catch-Up Packs allows duplicate protection to target the remaining gaps in your collection.
- Open Current Expansion Packs Last: Catch-Up Packs only pull from past expansions, excluding the latest live release. Open your newest expansion packs last to direct fresh card acquisition strictly toward the current set.
Opening a bundle of regular packs beforehand raises your collection rates and can drop a 50-card Catch-Up Pack down to 20 cards or fewer.
How Card Yields Are Calculated
Each Catch-Up Pack pulls cards from five prior Standard expansions. Instead of granting a fixed five cards like normal booster packs, a Catch-Up Pack evaluates your collection completeness for each of those five sets independently:
- Individual set scaling: If you own 0% of cards in an eligible expansion, you receive the maximum of 10 cards for that specific set. If you already have a complete set in one expansion, that set yields fewer cards, but it does not reduce the yield from other sets where your collection is empty.
- Duplicate protection: Standard duplicate protection applies across all rarities. You will not pull duplicate Commons, Rares, or Epics until you own two copies of every card of that rarity in the set, and Legendaries remain unique until you own every Legendary from that expansion.
Expected Yields by Collection Percentage
The number of cards granted per set scales down on an inverse curve as your collection percentage for that set rises:
| Set Completion Percentage | Expected Cards per Set | Total Yield (5 Sets) | Primary Account Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0% to 25% | 8 to 10 cards | 40 to 50 cards | New players or long-inactive accounts |
| 26% to 50% | 5 to 7 cards | 25 to 35 cards | Returning players missing multiple sets |
| 51% to 75% | 3 to 5 cards | 15 to 25 cards | Casual players with partial collections |
| 76% to 100% | 1 to 3 cards | 5 to 15 cards | Active players with near-complete sets |
A player starting with zero progress can gain 150 to 250 cards from opening just three to five Catch-Up Packs, quickly securing the bulk of Common and Rare foundations for Standard play.
Limitations and Dust Management
Catch-Up Packs carry specific trade-offs based on account progression:
- No current expansion cards: Catch-Up Packs do not contain cards from the latest live expansion. Key cards and archetypes from the newest set must still be pulled from current expansion packs or crafted with Arcane Dust.
- Diminishing returns for active players: If you maintain an active collection and already own over 70% of the cards across past Standard sets, Catch-Up Packs yield near their minimum floor. Active players gain far more value by saving gold for mini-sets or regular packs.
- Disenchanting strategy: Opening bulk cards can quickly create duplicate copies once rarity brackets fill up. Rather than using the mass-disenchant button immediately, retain duplicate cards until balance patches arrive, as nerfed cards qualify for full Arcane Dust refunds during limited refund windows. Spend resulting dust on build-around Epic or Legendary cards needed to complete functional decks.
