To win with Shadow Quest Priest in Hearthstone, you must play cards on curve to fulfill each tier of the Seek Guidance questline, stabilize the board with shadow spells, and tutor the Purified Shard shuffled into your deck by Xyrella, the Sanctified.
How Seek Guidance Works
Seek Guidance requires you to play cards in strict mana-cost pairs across three sequential tiers. You cannot make progress on a higher tier until the preceding tier is completed.
- Tier 1: Play a 2-cost, a 3-cost, and a 4-cost card. Completing this tier lets you Discover a card from your deck.
- Tier 2: Play a 5-cost and a 6-cost card. Completing this tier triggers a second Discover from your deck.
- Tier 3: Play a 7-cost and an 8-cost card. Completing this tier adds Xyrella, the Sanctified to your hand.
Always use the Discover rewards from Tiers 1 and 2 to pull cards for your upcoming mana brackets rather than choosing reactive luxuries. If your hand already holds your next required drops, pick defensive answers or card draw instead.
Early-Game Curve and Mulligan Strategy
Keep Seek Guidance in your opening hand. Your mulligan goal is finding a guaranteed 2-cost card along with playable 3-cost and 4-cost options.
| Mana Bracket | Primary Card Function | Board Objective |
|---|---|---|
| 2-Cost | Cheap shadow removal, card draw, early healing | Contest fast openers and advance Tier 1 immediately. |
| 3-Cost | Targeted removal, defensive Taunts, generation | Clear priority targets and preserve hero health. |
| 4-Cost | Area-of-effect (AoE) clears, tempo bodies | Clear wide token boards and complete Tier 1. |
Do not float mana unnecessarily in early turns if you have an eligible quest piece. Even against low-threat boards, playing cards that match your current quest bracket accelerates your path to the late game.
Navigating the Mid-Game (5-Cost and 6-Cost)
The turns covering your 5-drop and 6-drop represent the most dangerous phase of the match against aggressive and combo opponents.
- Prioritize Stabilization at 5 Mana: Play 5-cost shadow board wipes and defensive minions over pure resource generation if you are taking heavy damage.
- Drop High-Impact Answers at 6 Mana: Use heavy single-target removal, large Taunt minions, or restorative effects to blunt the opponent's board initiative.
- Bridge into Tier 3: Use the Tier 2 Discover reward to pull your 7-cost or 8-cost card directly to hand so you do not stall.
Closing the Match with Purified Shard
Playing your 8-cost card finishes Tier 3 and adds Xyrella, the Sanctified (a 5-mana 7/7 minion) to your hand. Her Battlecry shuffles the Purified Shard into your deck. The Purified Shard costs 10 mana and instantly destroys the enemy hero, bypassing health totals, Armor, and Immune effects.
To execute the win without giving the opponent extra turns:
- Hold Draw Effects for Post-Xyrella Turns: Do not waste targeted card-draw or spell-tutors earlier if you can avoid it. Save them to draw the Purified Shard the moment Xyrella shuffles it into your deck.
- Plan Mana Allocation: Because Purified Shard costs 10 mana, casting it requires an entire turn. Ensure incoming board threats are cleared beforehand so you can safely commit your full mana pool to the lethal spell.

This saved me time in the early game.
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
This guide answered the exact question I had.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
