To succeed with tempo C'Thun Demon Hunter in Hearthstone, secure board initiative on turns 1 through 4 using low-cost minions and hero attacks. Rather than passively floating mana or stockpiling combo cards, establish a health total lead early so you can safely cast 5-mana C'Thun spells later. Cycling your deck with Outcast draw effects lets you reassemble C'Thun, the Shattered and deploy its 30-damage Battlecry before slower opponents can recover.
Mulligan Keeps and Discards
Toss any 5-mana C'Thun pieces that appear in your opening hand. Holding an unplayable 5-cost spell clogs hand positions, deactivates Outcast triggers on adjacent cards, and surrenders the early board. Prioritize proactive 1-drop and 2-drop cards that contest the board immediately.
| Card | Mulligan Decision | Strategic Role |
|---|---|---|
| Spirit Jailer | Always keep | Contests turn 1 and adds Soul Shards to the deck |
| Battlefiend | Always keep | Snowballs attack damage alongside Demon Claws |
| Crimson Sigil Runner | Always keep | Provides cheap board presence and early draw |
| Manafeeder Panthara | Keep with The Coin | Curves into Hero Power activation on turn 2 |
| Umberwing | Keep with The Coin | Develops multiple bodies to contest wide boards |
| Aldrachi Warblades | Keep vs. Aggro/Midrange | Clears minions while restoring hero health |
| Skull of Gul'dan | Keep only on far left | Prepares mid-game draw without blocking Outcast |
| Any C'Thun Piece | Always toss | Dead draw early that disables Outcast hand positioning |
Early Curve and Board Control (Turns 1–4)
Your 1-mana Hero Power, Demon Claws, allows you to weave hero attacks between minion drops without sacrificing board development. Use early weapon swings and attack buffs like Twin Slice or Chaos Strike to remove enemy minions directly. Taking damage with your hero preserves your minions so they can continuously push chip damage to the enemy face.
Establishing board control during the first three turns creates the safety required to play expensive spells later. If you enter turn 5 facing an opposing board with no friendly minions, spending 5 mana on a non-defensive C'Thun spell will cost you excessive health. Equip Aldrachi Warblades or Dreadlord's Bite on turns 3 and 4 to absorb minion trades, keeping your side of the board intact.
Deploying the Four C'Thun Pieces
Before C'Thun, the Shattered shuffles into your deck as a 10-mana 30/30 minion, you must cast all four of its 5-mana component spells. Deploy each piece according to the current board state rather than forcing them out on curve:
- Body of C'Thun (Summon a 6/6 Taunt): Your default proactive play. Cast it on an even or favored board to establish a large defensive roadblock.
- Eye of C'Thun (Deal 7 damage randomly split among all enemies): Play this when the opposing board is empty or nearly clear. Minimizing enemy minions ensures the missiles strike the enemy hero.
- Heart of C'Thun (Deal 3 damage to all minions): Save this board clear for wide aggressive boards or token pushes. Avoid casting it if you already hold minion dominance.
- Maw of C'Thun (Destroy a minion): Reserve this single-target removal for large enemy Taunts, giants, or high-health threats that weapons cannot efficiently trade into.
Do not play a C'Thun piece on turn 5 if developing stats—such as activating a discounted Bladed Lady alongside a cheap cycle tool—maintains stronger tempo.
Managing Outcast Draw Engines
Fast cycling separates tempo C'Thun Demon Hunter from passive control builds. Outcast cards require you to play them from the leftmost or rightmost position in your hand to gain bonus effects. Spend cheap 0-mana and 1-mana cards, along with generated Soul Shards, to slide draw cards like Spectral Sight into active trigger positions.
Skull of Gul'dan is your primary accelerator. Drawing three cards and discounting each by 3 mana transforms 5-mana C'Thun pieces into 2-mana spells. This cost reduction allows you to cast two C'Thun pieces in a single turn, significantly speeding up assembly. If Skull of Gul'dan discounts C'Thun, the Shattered after it shuffles into your deck, its cost drops to 7 mana, leaving you with 3 floating mana to clear Taunts with Hero Power or weapons before launching the 30-damage Battlecry.
Matchup Approaches
Your execution shifts depending on whether the opponent plays aggro or control:
- Against Aggro: Reassembling C'Thun is rarely necessary. Focus entirely on board preservation and survival. Combine Aldrachi Warblades with attack-increasing cards to regain substantial life in a single turn, running fast opponents out of threats until they concede to mid-game tempo swings.
- Against Control: Act as the aggressor. Apply constant minion pressure across turns 1 through 6 to force out defensive removal. Once the opponent spends resources stabilizing, cycle through your remaining deck, assemble the four components, and play C'Thun, the Shattered onto a clear board to close out the game.
