To win with C'Thun Demon Hunter in Hearthstone, cycle through your deck to assemble and cast all four 5-mana C'Thun fragments, then play the completed 10-mana C'Thun, the Shattered to finish the opponent with 30 Battlecry damage. Demon Hunter accelerates this game plan by using cheap cycle spells and the Outcast mechanic to thin the deck faster than traditional control archetypes.
The C'Thun Assembly Process
At the start of the match, C'Thun, the Shattered splits into four distinct 5-mana spells shuffled into your deck. Each fragment provides board control while advancing your win condition:
- Eye of C'Thun: Deals 7 damage split randomly among all enemies. Use this after clearing opposing minions with spells like Immolation Aura to direct the full damage to the enemy hero, or use it to pick off damaged targets behind Taunt.
- Heart of C'Thun: Deals 3 damage to all minions. Save this for opponent wide-board reload turns rather than spending it on single targets.
- Body of C'Thun: Summons a 6/6 minion with Taunt. Drop this on contested or empty turns to force awkward trades.
- Maw of C'Thun: Destroys the enemy minion with the highest attack. Reserve this for large single threats or heavily buffed minions.
Once you cast the fourth fragment, the completed 10-mana C'Thun, the Shattered is shuffled into your deck. Because your cycle engine routinely leaves fewer than five cards in your deck by Turn 9 or Turn 10, you can draw and play the completed Old God on curve. Clear opposing minions before deploying C'Thun so all 30 missiles hit the opposing hero.
Mulligan Priorities
Never keep natural C'Thun fragments in your opening hand. Starting with 5-mana spells clogs your hand and blocks your Outcast triggers.
- Universal Keeps: Keep Double Jump, Immolation Aura, and Spectral Sight when positioned on the far left or far right of your opening hand.
- Against Aggro: Keep Aldrachi Warblades, Chaos Strike, and Eye Beam. Use your 1-mana Hero Power, Demon Claws, on early turns to clear 1-health minions and preserve your life total.
- Against Control: Keep Skull of Gul'dan when it sits on the left side of your hand or when you have the Coin to accelerate your Turn 5 or Turn 6 mana curve.
Managing Outcast Positioning and Card Draw
Outcast cards require an exterior hand position (the far left or far right) to trigger their bonus effects. Because drawing 5-mana C'Thun fragments can lodge them on the edges of your hand, you must plan your card sequencing carefully.
| Card Name | Mana Cost | Deck Function | Optimal Hand Position |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skull of Gul'dan | 6 | Draws 3 cards; reduces their cost by (3) if Outcast | Far left or far right |
| Double Jump | 1 | Tutors an Outcast card from your deck | Any slot |
| Spectral Sight | 2 | Draws 1 card; draws 2 cards if Outcast | Far left or far right |
| Eye Beam | 3 | Deals 3 Lifesteal damage; costs (1) if Outcast | Far left or far right |
If a C'Thun fragment gets stuck on the left side of your hand, play cards from the right until you reach 5 mana to cast the fragment and restore Outcast access. Skull of Gul'dan is your best recovery mechanism: drawing fragments with Skull reduces their cost from 5 to 2 mana, allowing you to cast multiple fragments in a single turn without sacrificing tempo.
Matchup Strategy
Adjust your win condition depending on the speed of the opposing deck:
- Surviving Aggro: You rarely need to cast the completed C'Thun to win against aggressive decks. Equip Aldrachi Warblades and combine it with attack buffs like Chaos Strike or Relentless Pursuit to restore health while eliminating board threats. Aggressive opponents typically concede once you clear their board with Heart of C'Thun or deploy Body of C'Thun.
- Outracing Control: Against control and combo decks, prioritize maximum draw velocity. Cycle through your deck before the opponent can build high armor totals or set up their own combos. Once the fourth fragment resolves, track your remaining deck size; if the deck is empty, C'Thun is a guaranteed draw on your next turn. Remove enemy Taunt minions using your remaining low-cost spells, then drop C'Thun to close the game.

The explanation is clear, especially for beginners.
Can you add more details about strategy in a future update?
Nice guide. I am checking the other Hearthstone articles next.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
