In Hero Clash, battle formations use a fixed six-slot grid divided into a front row (Slots 1, 2, and 3) and a back row (Slots 4, 5, and 6). Place your primary tank in Slot 1 to absorb opening attacks, deploy off-tanks or durable utility units in Slots 2 and 3, and reserve Slots 4 through 6 for fragile damage dealers and supports.
The Six-Slot Formation Grid
Standard attacks strike the opposing front row first, starting with the unit directly across from the attacker before shifting downward. Once the front row falls, regular attacks advance to the backline.
| Slot | Row | Tactical Role | Recommended Hero Types |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slot 1 | Front (Top) | Primary damage soak | Main tanks with high HP, shields, or revive mechanics |
| Slot 2 | Front (Middle) | Secondary damage soak | Bruisers, off-tanks, durable crowd-control heroes |
| Slot 3 | Front (Bottom) | Flex frontline defense | Evasive warriors, durable supports |
| Slot 4 | Back (Top) | Secondary carry or buffer | Ranged burst damage, team buffers |
| Slot 5 | Back (Middle) | Primary carry | Highest-damage hypercarries, primary healers |
| Slot 6 | Back (Bottom) | Sustained carry or flex | Secondary damage dealers, debuffers, finishers |
Slot 1 absorbs the brunt of incoming basic attacks because targeting prioritizes the top lane downward. Placing a glass cannon in Slot 1 results in rapid elimination before they can cast an ultimate. Slot 5 offers the highest natural protection, shielded by all front-row slots and adjacent backline allies.
Skill Targeting vs. Basic Attack Targeting
While basic attacks follow standard front-to-back priority, hero skills and ultimates follow specific skill descriptions that often bypass the frontline:
- Backline Snipers: Certain assassins and damage dealers target the back row directly or home in on the ally with the highest attack or lowest current HP.
- Row Cleaves: Horizontal sweep attacks strike an entire row at once.
- Column Bursts: Piercing attacks travel down a single horizontal lane, striking both the front and back units in that line.
Read incoming enemy skill descriptions before starting difficult campaign stages or trials. When facing targeted assassins, equip defensive gear on your highest-attack carry or swap an off-tank with high attack into the backline to intercept the burst. If an enemy uses a column pierce, move your frailest support out of the lane directly behind your Slot 1 tank.
Action Priority: Speed vs. Slot Number
Slot number does not determine which hero attacks first. Combat turn order across all twelve units on the field is governed by each hero's Speed (SPD) stat.
- Compare Speed Stats: The unit with the highest Speed on the battlefield takes the first turn.
- Resolve Speed Ties: If two or more heroes share the exact same Speed value, the lower slot number acts first (Slot 1 acts before Slot 2, continuing through Slot 6).
Equip your fastest Speed gear, runes, and artifacts on crowd-control initiators and key buffers so they cast disables and buffs before enemy damage dealers act. Rely on slot numbers only as an internal tiebreaker for heroes with identical stats.
