Honor of Kings: What Each Role Does for Beginners

Choose a role based on the tasks you want to focus on: lane play, jungle camps and ganks, or team support. The five roles below have different responsibilities, so use them to pick a position to learn.

What the five roles do

• Clash Lane: Usually occupied by warriors or tanks. Focus on your lane matchup and, when appropriate, rotate to support nearby objectives.
• Jungle: Clear neutral camps, then use your map mobility to gank lanes and support early pressure.
• Mid Lane: Clear minion waves and rotate to assist side lanes. Mages commonly fill this role, providing crowd control and burst damage in team fights.
• Farm Lane: Prioritize gold while staying safe, especially early on. This position is described as the team’s primary damage dealer.
• Roam: Support the team by providing vision, initiating fights, and protecting teammates.

Pick a position to focus on

Start with the role whose listed responsibilities sound most appealing. If you’re new, the draft recommends focusing on two or three straightforward heroes rather than learning several complex ones at once. It does not name specific beginner heroes, so choose a hero in your selected role based on the options available to you.

Once you’ve picked a role, practice its core tasks: clearing waves in a lane, clearing camps and looking for ganks as a jungler, or supporting teammates as a roamer.
