In Idle Heroes, Skill Damage adds directly to the attack coefficient of Aspen and Lord of Fear Aspen's active abilities rather than multiplying their total outgoing damage. Because it only increases the base active percentage and does not affect basic attacks, counterattacks, or passive execute thresholds, stacking Skill Damage past an energy artifact yields diminishing returns. To maximize damage, rely on an artifact like Melodic Strings for baseline active power, then invest your Soul Stones and Void Imprints into Holy Damage, Attack, and Critical stats.
How Skill Damage Calculates on Aspen
Skill Damage functions additively with an active skill's listed attack percentage. It does not act as a separate damage multiplier at the end of the combat formula.
If Aspen uses an active skill with a 400% Attack multiplier and has 100% Skill Damage:
- The active skill multiplier becomes 500% Attack (400% + 100%).
- The 100% Skill Damage provides an effective 25% increase over the base skill output, rather than doubling total damage.
Every additional point of Skill Damage yields a lower relative gain as base multipliers increase. Furthermore, Skill Damage offers no benefit outside active turns:
- Basic Attacks: Rely purely on base attack and secondary multipliers like Crit and Holy Damage.
- Passive Executes: Damage triggered by enemy missing health or attack thresholds completely bypasses the Skill Damage stat.
Comparing Skill Damage, Holy Damage, and Crit Damage
Because Skill Damage merely increases pre-mitigation skill coefficients, heavily armored enemies in Void Campaign absorb much of its added value. In contrast, Holy Damage bypasses large portions of enemy armor and damage reduction, applying across all active skills, basic attacks, and passives. Critical Damage multiplies all damage when critical strikes land, enabling Lord of Fear Aspen to score the early eliminations needed to spread fear debuffs.
| Stat | Calculation Role | Attacks Affected | Primary Sources | Diminishing Return Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Skill Damage | Adds directly to active skill % | Active skills only | Melodic Strings, Guild Tech | High (rises with high base skill %) |
| Holy Damage | Multiplicative true damage | Actives, basic attacks, passives | Void Imprints, Soul Stones | Low (effective against armored targets) |
| Crit Damage | Multiplies critical hit damage | All critical strikes | Soul Stones, Artifacts, Imprints | Moderate (depends on high Crit rate) |
Artifact Priorities: Melodic Strings vs. Antlers Cane
Your choice of artifact determines whether you need any additional Skill Damage.
- Melodic Strings: The standard choice for Lord of Fear Aspen in burst encounters. At upgraded tiers, it provides 100 starting energy alongside a massive Skill Damage bonus. This guarantees a turn-one active skill to apply fear and eliminate key targets before the enemy can buff or shield. Because Melodic Strings already provides high Skill Damage, do not add more from other equipment slots.
- Antlers Cane: The preferred choice for extended PvE boss fights. It ramps all-damage bonuses over multiple rounds, delivering sustained scaling that far exceeds static Skill Damage across multi-turn encounters.
Recommended Soul Stone and Void Imprint Setup
To avoid wasting stat slots on additive Skill Damage, configure Aspen's permanent upgrades for raw Attack, armor penetration, and Critical consistency:
- Soul Stone: Roll for Holy Damage / Attack / Attack or Crit / Crit Damage / Attack. Avoid locking Skill Damage rolls on the stone.
- Void Imprints: Select Holy Damage, Crit Damage, and Damage Reduction nodes. Bypassing the Skill Damage imprint ensures consistent damage during non-active rounds.
- Guild Tech: Maximize primary tree nodes for Attack and Crit before filling secondary Skill Damage nodes.
Mode-Specific Strategies
Adjust your setup depending on the encounter length and primary win condition:
- Void Campaign: Matches are decided in the first two rounds. Run Melodic Strings to trigger a round-one active skill. The burst must clear the lethal threshold immediately to spread fear and disrupt the enemy backline.
- Boss Modes (Star Expedition, Guild Raid, Flame Shrine): Bosses cannot be burst down in round one. Over 15 rounds, Aspen relies heavily on basic attacks and energy cycles. Swap out Melodic Strings for Antlers Cane, and rely on Holy Damage and Crit scaling to maximize cumulative score.

I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
The tips are practical and easy to follow.
Nice guide. I am checking the other Idle Heroes articles next.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
