To pilot the Soviet/Japan KV Control deck in KARDS - The WW2 Card Game, stabilize your support line during the first four turns with low-cost removal and pins, then deploy heavy Soviet tanks starting on turn 5 to exhaust enemy attackers.

Core Mechanics and Card Roles
The archetype pairs the defensive resilience of the Soviet Union with Japan's direct disruption tools to counter fast aggro and midrange boards.
| Tactical Component | Key Cards & Mechanics | Strategic Role |
|---|---|---|
| Soviet Heavy Core | KV-1 1939, KV-1 1941, Heavy Armor | Blocks the frontline, negates low-damage attacks, and absorbs trades |
| Early Soviet Defense | Bloody Sickle, Light Infantry, Katyusha | Clears small units, cycles cards, and contests early deployment |
| Japanese Ally Suite | Direct removal orders, tactical pins | Stalls enemy momentum, neutralizes bombers, and covers the turn 1–4 curve |
The Heavy Armor mechanic reduces all incoming combat and order damage by its numeric value. When an enemy unit with 1 or 2 attack hits a tank with Heavy Armor 1, it deals zero damage while taking full counterattack damage. This forces opponents to commit disproportionate resources or multiple units to overcome your frontline.
Heavy tanks carry significant Kredit demands. Deploying a KV tank consumes 5 or more Kredits, and operating it to move or attack costs 2 to 3 Kredits. You must stabilize the battlefield before committing your pool to these units, preventing opponents from slipping past an empty line.
Mulligan and Early Turn Sequence
Never keep heavy tanks in your opening hand. Holding 5-Kredit units reduces your available answers against early aggression. Mulligan aggressively for 1-Kredit and 2-Kredit defensive tools.
Execute the opening turns using this sequence:
- Turn 1 (1 Kredit): Pass or cast cheap removal like Bloody Sickle to eliminate enemy scout units and cycle cards.
- Turn 2 (2 Kredits): Deploy light screening units or Katyusha to contest enemy deployment, or bank Kredits to respond to immediate frontline rushers.
- Turn 3 (3 Kredits): Apply Japanese pins or mid-range removal to stall advancing units and protect your HQ defense total.
- Turn 4 (4 Kredits): Clear remaining frontline threats to prepare a clean board state for your upcoming heavy deployment.
Deploying and Protecting KV Tanks
Dropping a KV-1 1939 on turn 5 consumes all five of your Kredits, leaving no margin to respond to surprise orders or burst damage. Check the board before committing:
- If the enemy threatens lethal or heavy HQ damage, use removal spells or screening units before fielding your tank.
- Heavy Armor does not prevent destruction from hard-kill removal orders, and enemy bombers can strike over ground units without taking counter-damage.
- Use Japanese tactical pins to neutralize airborne units and force ground trades directly into your armored units.
Matchup Execution
Adjust your resource spending based on the opposing archetype:
- Against Aggro Decks (Blitz and Rush): Prioritize board control over attacking. Once a KV tank claims the frontline, avoid spending 2 to 3 Kredits each turn just to attack unless you have surplus resources. Let enemy units break against your armor. Deploy extra blockers and preserve removal orders until the opponent exhausts their hand.
- Against Control Decks: Avoid deploying flagship KV tanks onto an open board where expensive removal orders can eliminate them without consequence. Bait removal using mid-range units, bank your Kredits, and pair deployments with Japanese pins to shut down key responses before pushing for the enemy HQ.
