To complete the Hero-Only challenge in Kingdom Rush 6: Genesis, you must defend your exit gates without placing any towers on construction plots and without activating support spells. Your heroes serve as your entire defense, health pool, and damage engine. Winning requires clustering your units at convergent choke points, actively cycling frontline brawlers out of direct combat to regenerate, and timing area-of-effect (AoE) abilities to destroy packed enemy waves.

Rules and Core Restrictions

The Hero-Only challenge strips away standard defenses and economic scaling:

  • No tower construction: Every building plot must remain completely empty for the entire stage. Gold earned during waves cannot be spent on static defenses.
  • Zero active spells: Reinforcements and direct-damage screen spells are forbidden. All stalling, damage, and crowd control must come directly from your hero roster.
  • Micro-dependent sustain: Because you cannot lean on passive barrack stalls or healer towers, heroes must absorb all lane pressure through manual body-blocking and coordinated ability rotations.

Chokepoint Positioning and Formation Setup

Without towers to cover divergent paths, splitting heroes across multiple distant lanes leaves each unit vulnerable to being overwhelmed. Instead, establish your main defensive perimeter at the final natural choke point where all enemy paths merge before reaching the exit gate.

Set your formation in depth:

  1. The Primary Frontline: Position your highest-health melee brawlers directly in the center of the converging lane. This forces incoming enemies to halt, bunch together, and fight in a tight pack.
  2. The Midline Fire Support: Station ranged and burst-damage heroes just behind your melee blockers. This keeps them out of direct melee contact while placing their abilities within range of the clustered enemy pack.
  3. The Rear Guard: Keep a high-mobility or high-burst hero stationed slightly behind the midline to act as an emergency safety net.

Cycling Frontline Aggro and Hero Health

Melee heroes will quickly fall if left in continuous combat against heavy waves. Because heroes naturally regenerate health when disengaged from active combat, you must cycle aggro dynamically rather than letting a single hero tank until defeated.

Follow this rotation when a frontline hero takes heavy damage:

  1. Select the injured brawler and move them five to ten paces back down the track, breaking enemy targeting.
  2. Immediately step a secondary, full-health melee hero forward into the gap to inherit the enemy aggro.
  3. Leave the wounded hero behind the line until their health recovers, then rotate them back into position when the active tank takes sustained damage.

Timing Abilities Against Swarm Waves

Dense swarm waves are the primary threat during a towerless run because hero basic attacks cannot eliminate targets quickly enough. Stagger your cooldowns across distinct phases of the wave rather than firing every ability on initial contact.

Wave PhaseTactical ActionObjective
Initial ContactDeploy low-cooldown sweeps and cone attacksClear weak frontline trash to isolate heavier units
Peak DensityTrigger high-damage crowd control and stunsFreeze the clustered wave and maximize AoE damage
Clean-UpFocus single-target skills on remaining elitesEliminate armored stragglers without wasting broad AoE skills

Neutralizing Ranged Attackers and Armor

High-priority targets exploit the lack of defensive tower coverage and require deliberate focus:

  • Ranged attackers: Enemy archers and spellcasters will stop outside your melee wall and pick off your tanks. Route mobile heroes or long-range single-target skills to the flanks to take out backline snipers before they whittle down your frontline.
  • Armored brutes: Standard physical swings deal minimal damage to heavy armor. Keep armored enemies pinned against your primary tank while directing your heroes with armor-piercing or true-damage skills directly onto them.

Intercepting Wave Leaks

If a fast runner slips past your frontline wall, never pull your entire squad backward to pursue it. Abandoning the choke point allows the rest of the enemy wave to flood straight to the exit.

Send only your designated rear-guard hero to intercept and eliminate the runner in the secondary catch zone. Once the leak is cleared, return that hero to their support post behind the main line.
