Beating Kingdom Rush Frontiers using exclusively Barracks towers is a grueling self-imposed challenge that transforms your standard stalling units into your primary damage output. In a game designed around the synergy of towers, artillery, and mages, restricting yourself to Barracks forces a complete paradigm shift in strategy. You are no longer managing a diversified defense; you are managing a living, breathing wall of steel. By abandoning long-range support, you must rely entirely on hero abilities, tactical reinforcement positioning, and the specialized skill trees of the Templar and Assassin barracks to mitigate the lack of area-of-effect (AoE) damage.
Mastering Choke Point Management
In a standard playthrough, your Barracks exist to hold enemies in place for your artillery to demolish. In an "Only Barracks" run, your Barracks are the demolition crew. Success hinges entirely on "choke point density."
You cannot afford to have enemies scatter across multiple paths or bypass your soldiers. You must prioritize stage layouts where paths converge into narrow segments. By forcing the enemy to funnel through a single point, you ensure that every soldier you spawn is actively engaging an enemy, rather than standing idle.
The Rally Point Mechanic: The most critical skill for this challenge is the aggressive use of the rally point. Do not leave your rally points stationary. If a soldier is at low health, pull the rally point back to allow them to heal or to bring fresh reinforcements into the fray. Conversely, if you need to intercept a fast unit before it reaches a turn, push the rally point forward. Constant micro-management of these rally points is the only way to prevent "leaking" when your troops are overwhelmed by high-density waves.
Choosing Your Anchor: Templars vs. Assassins
Because you lack the luxury of upgrading different tower types, you must specialize your Barracks choices based on the specific threats of each stage.
The Templar (The Wall)
Templars are your defensive anchors. Their high base health and specialized abilities make them the only unit capable of surviving sustained combat against heavy-hitting bosses or armored waves.
- Holy Grail: Essential for survivability, allowing your units to endure significantly longer against heavy melee damage.
- Shield of Retribution: This is your primary source of consistent damage. Since your troops are constantly being hit, the reflected damage chips away at enemy health, turning their strength against them.
The Assassin (The Executioner)
When armor is too thick for raw damage, you need Assassins. They are your primary "boss killers" and are mandatory for stages featuring high-defense enemies.
- Critical Strike: This allows your troops to bypass armor values, which is vital when you don't have Mage towers to deal true damage.
- Gamble: Though risky, the burst potential of the Assassin can eliminate high-priority targets before they reach your exit. Use these when you are facing "glass cannon" enemies or specialized ranged threats.
Hero Selection and Synergy
Your hero is no longer a support unit; they are your most powerful offensive asset. In an Only Barracks run, you should prioritize heroes who possess high AoE damage, stuns, or true damage capabilities.
- AoE Heroes: Heroes like Alric or Dante are exceptional here. Their ability to clear trash mobs allows your soldiers to focus their limited damage on the high-health enemies.
- Stun Capabilities: Any hero that can stun is worth their weight in gold. A stun provides a "breather" for your soldiers, allowing the cooldown on your Barracks spawn to tick down and keep the line from breaking.
Positioning Strategy: Always keep your hero centered in your primary choke point. Use their active abilities only when enemy density is at its absolute peak. Do not waste a high-cooldown AoE ability on a small group of enemies; save it for the moment a large cluster hits your soldier line.
Handling Flying and Ranged Threats
The greatest weakness of a Barracks-only build is the inability to target flying enemies or ranged units. Without archers, you must utilize the environment and your reinforcement spell to compensate.
- Reinforcement Baiting: If an enemy archer or caster is sitting behind the front line, use your Reinforcement spell to summon troops directly on top of them. This forces them into melee combat, preventing them from firing at your main line.
- Flying Interception: Flying units are the most difficult to deal with because they ignore your soldiers. You must position your hero specifically to intercept them. If a path has a section where the flyer passes near a turn, ensure your hero is stationed there to use their ranged attacks or abilities to bring them down.
Resource Allocation and Upgrades
In a restricted run, gold management is simplified but critical. Since you aren't building a variety of towers, you will often have an excess of gold. Do not hold it.
Upgrade Priority:
- Respawn Speed: Your soldiers need to be on the field constantly. The faster they respawn, the less time the enemy has to push through your line.
- Special Abilities: Focus on the abilities that provide damage (Critical Strike/Retribution) first.
- Base Health: Upgrade this only when you find your units are dying too quickly to survive between respawn cycles.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Over-extending: Do not try to defend the entire map. Pick one or two high-value choke points and invest every coin into those specific towers. A cluster of fully upgraded Tier 4 Barracks is infinitely more effective than a spread-out line of Tier 2 units.
- Ignoring Reinforcements: Your Reinforcement spell is effectively a mobile, temporary Barracks. Treat it as such. Use it to plug gaps in your line or to provide extra bodies for your Templars to hide behind.
- Forgetting to Move the Hero: Many players leave their hero in the starting position. In Kingdom Rush Frontiers, your hero is a dynamic unit. If your soldiers are dying in lane A, move your hero to lane A immediately.
By focusing on high-tier barracks upgrades and mastering the art of the choke point, you can turn the humble soldier into an unstoppable force. This challenge demands patience and precision, but clearing a stage with nothing but your troops proves that even the simplest towers can hold the kingdom against any threat.

This saved me time in the early game.
Can you add more details about heroes in a future update?
