To prevent hostile marches from wiping out your stationed army in a single attack in Kingshot, open your Barricade building and manually assign dedicated defense heroes to every open slot. Kingshot does not automatically station your strongest commanders on your wall. Without heroes assigned directly to the Barricade, your stationed garrison fights using only baseline troop statistics, suffering unmitigated skill damage that can instantly fill your Infirmary and kill your army.
Why Empty Barricade Slots Result in Instant Defeats
When an enemy attacks your settlement, combat calculations factor in the expedition skills, stat multipliers, and gear of the heroes assigned to your Barricade. Leaving these slots empty strips your army of damage mitigation and bonus attributes.
Even a large garrison of high-tier units will collapse quickly against an attacking march led by developed commanders. Because unmitigated area-of-effect damage rapidly depletes unit health, casualties can exceed your total Infirmary capacity in a single strike. Once hospital beds are full, all additional wounded units die permanently.
| Defense Component | With Assigned Barricade Heroes | Without Assigned Barricade Heroes |
|---|---|---|
| Expedition Skills | Shields, counterattacks, and damage reduction trigger each round. | No defensive skills trigger; troops take raw enemy skill damage. |
| Stat Multipliers | Percentage boosts apply to troop Defense, Health, and Lethality. | Troops rely entirely on base research and settlement stats. |
| Infirmary Flow | Slower casualty rates allow the Infirmary to absorb the wounded. | Rapid burst damage overflows capacity, causing permanent troop loss. |
The Roaming Hero Defense Trap
Assigning heroes to the Barricade only protects your settlement if those heroes remain inside the city walls. When an assigned hero is marching across the map—whether gathering resources, attacking beasts, or joining an alliance rally—the game treats their Barricade slot as empty during an incoming attack.
To prevent leaving your city undefended while you are active:
- Assign dedicated defense commanders to the Barricade instead of using your primary gathering heroes.
- Check your active march queues before entering high-risk PvP periods, such as cross-server kill events or Castle Battles.
- Recall defensive marches immediately if hostile scouts or incoming marches approach your coordinates.
Selecting Heroes for the Barricade
City defense relies on squad sustain, mitigation, and outlasting an attacker's offensive cooldowns rather than pure burst damage.
- Primary Slot (Infantry Commander): Set your strongest defensive Infantry hero as the primary defender. Infantry units absorb frontline damage first. Heroes offering percentage-based health increases, shields, or incoming damage reduction keep your frontline intact so your Cavalry and Ranged units can deal sustained damage.
- Secondary Slots: Select heroes whose skills provide universal damage reduction, overall squad defense, or counterattack bonuses to maximize trades against incoming rallies and solo marches.
Pre-Logoff Defense Checklist
Complete this checklist before closing the game to ensure your city is not left vulnerable to raiders:
- Check the Barricade: Tap the Barricade structure in your city and verify that all garrison hero slots are filled.
- Confirm Hero Presence: Ensure none of your assigned Barricade heroes are currently deployed on gathering tiles or long-distance marches.
- Equip Defense Gear: Confirm your assigned defenders are equipped with your highest-tier defensive gear and charms.
- Use a Peace Shield: If your troop count far exceeds your hospital capacity or you hold significant unshielded resources during hostile events, activate a Peace Shield before logging off.

Nice guide. I am checking the other Kingshot articles next.
Can you add more details about heroes in a future update?
The explanation is clear, especially for beginners.
This guide answered the exact question I had.
