Concentrate your skill upgrade materials entirely on the five heroes in your primary combat formation (March 1) instead of distributing books across your entire roster. Upgrade the active damage multiplier on your main damage dealer (DPS) first, followed immediately by damage reduction and shielding on your frontline tank. Leave secondary passives at level one until your primary combat abilities reach major milestone levels.

Skill Priorities by Squad Role

Hero abilities unlock across four slots as heroes gain star promotions and reach level thresholds: the default primary tactical skill, stat augments, troop-specific percentage enhancements, and fourth-tier awakening buffs. Align your manual investment with the tactical function of each hero slot.

Main DPS

Max out skills featuring high percentage damage scaling per level rather than flat damage numbers. Once the primary burst skill is leveled, invest into passives that boost troop attack, critical hit rate, or energy regeneration so the hero cycles tactical abilities faster.

Frontline Tanks

Prioritize pure damage absorption, self-shields, and damage mitigation passives. Leveling tank offensive abilities yields minimal return; survivability passives keep the frontline intact so backline carries have time to complete their skill rotations.

Support and Utility Heroes

Target skills that improve energy generation, debuff duration, or trigger chance. If an upgrade level only adds minor personal damage to a support unit without increasing its aura strength or crowd-control duration, stop leveling that skill and redirect manuals to your damage dealers.

Tactical Bursts vs. Troop Buff Passives

Your investment priority between active tactical skills and troop passives changes based on your progression stage and march capacity:

  • Early Game: Prioritize active tactical burst skills. When march sizes are small, direct hero damage accounts for most of your combat output in campaign stages and neutral encounters.
  • Late Game and PvP: Shift investment toward percentage-based troop buffs. As Sanctuary upgrades expand your march capacity to tens of thousands of units, passive troop bonuses scale multiplicatively across the entire battalion, surpassing individual hero burst damage in alliance rallies and competitive fights.

Resource Rules and Breakpoint Targets

Skill manuals and specialized books become severe bottlenecks past early milestones. Apply these rules to prevent wasted resources:

  1. Target Milestone Breakpoints: Check skill preview screens for major percentage jumps at milestone levels (such as levels 5, 8, and 10) rather than leveling abilities evenly.
  2. Restrict Universal Books to UR Heroes: Universal skill manuals are scarce. Save them exclusively for top-tier UR heroes, and avoid spending them on transitional SSR units that fall off in late-game content.
  3. Ignore Secondary March Skills: Keep secondary gathering squads and wall defense backups at baseline skill levels until your primary march reaches maximum combat readiness.

When to Reset Hero Skills

Last Asylum: Plague: Plague provides a hero reset option that refunds all invested experience, gold, and skill books. Only reset a leveled hero when you have enough promotion fragments and breakthrough materials to make the replacement commander immediately battle-ready. Resetting an active unit without an equivalent replacement leaves your main march underpowered.
