In Last Asylum: Plague: Plague, optimize your Research Lab by prioritizing development speed nodes first, economy and gathering next, mandatory Church prerequisites third, and Squad 1 combat stats fourth. Never distribute early military research across multiple squads. Spreading your points dilutes combat strength while delaying key settlement upgrades.
Early Research Priority Order
Progress through four focused phases to avoid stalled queues and maintain efficient base expansion:
| Phase | Tech Category | Key Focus | Primary Risk of Skipping |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Speed Acceleration | Development | Research Speed, Construction Speed | Long upgrade timers permanently delay later tiers. |
| 2. Resource Velocity | Economy | Basic Production, Gathering Speed | Base construction halts due to severe material deficits. |
| 3. Structural Access | Prerequisites | Church Milestone Tech | Facility upgrades stall behind missing prerequisites. |
| 4. Combat Specialization | Military | Squad 1 Attack, Defense, Lethality | Weak marches lose engagements against focused squads. |
Phase 1: Development and Construction Speed
Max out early Research Speed and Construction Speed nodes under the Development branch before investing in military power. Research speed bonuses compound across every subsequent project. Players who rush early combat stats gain a small short-term edge, but players who invest in development speed finish higher technology tiers days earlier. Push your primary research acceleration node to its initial cap alongside basic construction upgrades to keep your base expanding smoothly.
Phase 2: Resource Production and Gathering
Transition into basic resource production and gathering speed once initial speed nodes are locked in. Upgrades for advanced facilities such as the Sanctuary and Church require large quantities of wood, food, and building materials. Target passive resource generation to raise your passive hourly income, then upgrade map gathering speed so secondary marches collect supplies quickly and spend less time exposed on the world map. Skip deep resource storage capacity early on, as idle stockpiles invite enemy raids.
Phase 3: Church Prerequisite Technologies
The Church serves as an essential requirement for troop tier advancement. Upgrading the Church requires specific preceding nodes within the tech tree. If you ignore these nodes until your building queue reaches the Church, construction will stall while you wait out multi-hour research timers. Check future Church upgrade requirements in advance and clear prerequisite technologies during active play sessions so your structural progression never bottlenecks.
Phase 4: Concentrating Military Tech on Squad 1
Channel all early military research exclusively into your primary squad. Spreading combat points across Squad 1, Squad 2, and Squad 3 leaves all three underpowered. A single march with focused attack, defense, and lethality bonuses will consistently defeat an opponent of similar overall power who divided stats among several teams.
- Squad 1: Allocate all combat stat upgrades, troop-specific bonuses, and military scrolls here to handle primary threats and territory battles.
- Squad 2 and Squad 3: Treat secondary squads strictly as utility units for gathering world map resources and clearing low-level auxiliary targets.
- Pivoting to Secondary Squads: Begin researching upgrades for Squad 2 only after Squad 1 reaches its tier cap and your settlement reliably clears local encounters.

I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
Nice guide. I am checking the other Last Asylum: Plague articles next.
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
