In Last War, your Barracks determine the maximum tier, training speed, and batch volume of the soldiers that fill your squads and defend your base. To maintain steady military strength without idling production, prioritize bringing at least one Barracks to your current Headquarters level, promote stockpiled lower-tier units before training new recruits, and stagger building upgrades across your facilities.

Core Barracks Mechanics and Drill Ground Capacity

You can build and operate up to four separate Barracks on your base map. Each facility functions independently, giving you four separate queues to train new recruits or promote existing soldiers.

  • Troop Storage: Finished soldiers do not stay in the Barracks. Once a training or promotion cycle finishes, units immediately move to your Drill Grounds.
  • Production Caps: If your Drill Grounds reach maximum capacity, all Barracks production halts until you free up space through combat losses, deployments, or Drill Ground upgrades.
  • March Scaling: Squad marches led by Tank, Aircraft, or Missile heroes rely directly on these soldiers for base hit points and damage multipliers. Running out of troops severely weakens squad endurance regardless of hero gear.

Upgrading Barracks vs. Headquarters

Your Headquarters level sets the maximum level cap for your Barracks. Raising your Barracks level provides two direct mechanical upgrades:

  1. Unlocking Higher Troop Tiers: Specific building level thresholds allow you to produce higher-tier soldiers with elevated base attack, defense, and health attributes.
  2. Expanding Batch Size: Higher-level Barracks train more units in a single queue, extending offline production time and reducing how often you need to restart queues manually.

When planning upgrades, avoid upgrading all four Barracks at the same time. A Barracks undergoing construction cannot train or promote units. Stagger your upgrades so that two or three Barracks remain operational to keep troop replenishment steady. While rushing one primary Barracks to match your Headquarters unlocks the newest tier, your secondary Barracks must also be upgraded over time to prevent slow recovery rates after heavy combat.

Promoting Troops vs. Training Fresh Recruits

Once you unlock a new troop tier, your Drill Grounds will still hold older, lower-tier units. Rather than losing them in battle to clear space, use the Barracks promotion feature.

MethodResource CostTime RequiredPrimary Use
Fresh RecruitmentFull cost (Food, Iron, Coin)Full base training durationRefilling empty Drill Grounds after major losses
Troop PromotionTier-difference cost onlyFraction of full training durationUpgrading existing lower-tier units to your highest unlocked tier

Promotion calculates the difference in stats between the unit's current tier and the target tier, adjusting the required resources and time accordingly. Prioritize promoting your entire lower-tier reserve to your top tier before queuing large batches of fresh recruits from scratch.

Increasing Training Speed

As troop tiers increase, base timers grow considerably longer. Use these methods to shorten production cycles:

  • Station Production Survivors: Assign logistics-oriented survivors to your Barracks to cut base training time and increase batch capacity. Place your highest-star survivors in your highest-level Barracks to maximize percentage gains.
  • Research Military Tech: Focus on training-speed nodes in your Tech Center to permanently reduce training timers across all four Barracks queues.
  • Time Batch Completions: Align long training or promotion cycles with event windows such as Alliance Duel training days or Arms Race stages to maximize score milestones as units finish. Keep queues running continuously, especially before logging off.
