To build the most effective squad in Last War, deploy five heroes of the same vehicle type, place two defensive units in the front row, and arrange two damage dealers alongside one support buffer in the back row. Matching your squad type grants up to a 20% bonus to Attack, Defense, and HP, while aligning your composition against enemy types provides an additional 20% combat advantage.

Hero Grid and Positioning Rules

Every squad in Last War uses a fixed five-slot grid divided into two rows: two frontline positions and three backline positions. Direct attacks and single-target enemy skills target your frontline first.

  • Front Row (Two Slots): Assign your most durable defense heroes here. Units with damage reduction, shielding, or self-sustain absorb incoming damage and prevent fast team wipes. Placing fragile attackers in the front row causes them to fall before their primary skills activate.
  • Back Row (Three Slots): Assign your primary attackers and support buffers here. Keeping damage dealers protected in the backline ensures they stay alive long enough to cycle their abilities and clear enemy targets.

A standard functional team distributes hero roles across this grid using two defense tanks on the front line, supported by two damage dealers and one utility support hero in the back row.

Squad Type Synergy Bonuses

Every hero in Last War belongs to one of three vehicle types: Tank, Aircraft, or Missile. Deploying multiple heroes of the same type activates team-wide passive stat increases.

Squad CompositionAttack BonusDefense BonusHP Bonus
3 Matching Heroes+5%+5%+5%
3 + 2 Matching Heroes+10%+10%+10%
4 Matching Heroes+15%+15%+15%
5 Matching Heroes (Mono-Type)+20%+20%+20%

Because these percentage increases apply across all base attributes, fielding a mono-type team of five matching heroes yields the strongest squad synergy. Avoid breaking a 5-hero mono bonus for a mismatched unit unless that unit's skill output or star level significantly outvalues a 20% deficit across the entire team.

Vehicle Type Counter Triangle

In addition to squad composition bonuses, combat outcomes depend on the game's rock-paper-scissors counter system:

  • Tank beats Missile: Tank squads deal 20% bonus damage to Missile squads.
  • Missile beats Aircraft: Missile squads deal 20% bonus damage to Aircraft squads.
  • Aircraft beats Tank: Aircraft squads deal 20% bonus damage to Tank squads.

Before initiating marches against player garrisons or alliance targets, scout the opponent's squad type. Exploiting an archetype advantage swings combat in your favor even when opposing teams have comparable individual unit power.

For early to mid-game progression, building a full 5-Tank squad provides the most reliable route. Tank heroes appear earliest in standard recruitment and server progression, making their character shards easier to obtain than specialized Aircraft or Missile rosters.

A standard progression lineup uses the following setup:

  • Frontline: Murphy and Williams. Murphy mitigates incoming team-wide energy damage, while Williams provides physical durability on the frontline.
  • Backline: Kimberly, Stetmann, and Marshall. Kimberly acts as the primary area-of-effect attacker, Stetmann provides supplemental burst damage, and Marshall increases team damage output through critical strike buffs.

Focus resources on leveling and starring your core Tank lineup to progress through campaign stages before investing heavily into secondary Aircraft or Missile squads for late-game counter requirements.
