If your squad in Last War repeatedly loses against teams with lower combat power, your lineup has structural weaknesses. High aggregate power numbers often hide broken faction bonuses, inefficient equipment distribution, fragile heroes placed in front-row positions, or diluted shard upgrades.

To fix an underperforming team, lock in a pure five-hero faction bonus, equip gear matching each hero's specific role, position your units correctly, and concentrate your resources on a single primary march.

Secure the 5-Hero Faction Bonus

Fielding mixed hero types strips away squad-wide stat multipliers. Last War grants scaling stat boosts based on the number of matching faction types (Tank, Aircraft, or Missile) in your active march:

  • 5 Same-Type Heroes: +20% Squad HP, Attack, and Defense
  • 4 Same-Type + 1 Different: +15% Squad HP, Attack, and Defense
  • 3 Same-Type + 2 Same-Type: +10% Squad HP, Attack, and Defense to each respective group
  • Mixed Deployments: Strips away most or all passive faction bonuses

Dropping from a five-hero synergy to a four-plus-one lineup costs your entire team 5% across every core stat. Replacing an on-faction hero with an off-faction hero purely for individual combat power lowers your team's total output unless that replacement has substantially higher star ranks and exclusive gear. Maintain five heroes of the same type whenever possible.

Correct Formation and Row Positioning

Combat targeting in Last War resolves according to row positioning. Heroes placed in the front row absorb initial incoming burst and focus fire, while the back row stays protected longer.

  1. Place defensive tanks in the front row: Frontline defenders like Murphy and Williams absorb opening physical and energy attacks. Never place damage dealers or low-durability supports in front-row slots.
  2. Place primary damage dealers behind your strongest tank: Position sustained damage carries such as Kimberly, Tesla, or DVA directly behind your sturdiest frontliner to maximize their survival time.
  3. Protect support buffers in the backline: Support units like Marshall rely on staying alive to cycle their squad-wide attack buffs repeatedly. Shield them in the back row so they do not fall to early focus fire.

Specialize Equipment by Role

Spreading gear upgrades evenly across all four slots on every hero reduces performance. Each equipment piece provides specific combat stats:

  • Radar and Armor: Provide HP, Physical Defense, and Energy Defense.
  • Gun and Chip: Provide Attack, Critical Hit Rate, and Critical Damage.

Upgrading offensive gear on defensive tanks wastes stats on units with low damage scalers. Conversely, over-investing in defensive gear on backline carries leaves your frontline too fragile to survive opening exchanges.

Hero RolePrimary Gear PrioritySecondary Gear PriorityCombat Function
Frontline Tanks (e.g., Murphy, Williams)Radar & Armor (Target Level 40)Gun & Chip (Base Level)Mitigate physical and energy burst
Backline Carries (e.g., Kimberly, Tesla, DVA)Gun & Chip (Target Level 40)Radar & Armor (Moderate Level)Deliver burst and sustained damage
Support Buffers (e.g., Marshall)Radar & Armor (Survival Focus)Gun (Secondary Level)Survive long enough to trigger team buffs

Upgrade the Gun and Chip on your primary damage dealer to level 40 first, followed by the Radar and Armor on your main frontline tank.

Funnel Upgrades into Squad 1

Spreading universal hero shards, skill medals, and drone components across multiple squads weakens your overall account effectiveness. A single march with 5-star Ultra Rare (UR) heroes consistently defeats opponents who spread their investments across two or three 3-star squads.

Invest your universal legendary shards into your primary carry until they reach 4 or 5 stars to unlock their core skill multipliers and exclusive weapon capabilities. Only divert surplus resources into secondary marches after your first squad reaches max-level gear and high star ranks.

Check Faction Counter Matchups

Even an optimized lineup will struggle against a direct faction counter. Battles follow a triangular advantage system:

  • Tank beats Missile: Tank units deal 20% bonus damage against Missile lineups.
  • Missile beats Aircraft: Missile units deal 20% bonus damage against Aircraft lineups.
  • Aircraft beats Tank: Aircraft units deal 20% bonus damage against Tank lineups.

When facing an opposing squad that holds the faction advantage, your team takes increased damage while dealing reduced damage. Before engaging player bases or arena targets, scout the defender's composition. If you run a Tank squad, avoid attacking pure Aircraft compositions unless your power gap is large enough to overcome the 20% disadvantage.
