To play Viego effectively in the jungle in League of Legends: Wild Rift, clear camps using basic-attack resets after every ability, flank skirmishes using wall camouflage, and enter teamfights as a secondary carry to chain untargetable wraith possessions.
Jungle Clear Path and Early Ganks
Start by leveling Blade of the Ruined King (Q) to secure percentage-health damage against high-health jungle monsters. Every ability cast marks the target; your next basic attack strikes twice, restores health, and reduces the remaining cooldown on your Q. Always weave a basic attack between ability casts to maintain clear speed and sustain your health bar.
Follow this standard initial route:
- Red Brambleback (Red Buff): Open with Q and weave double-strike basic attacks to take down the buff without burning excessive health.
- Raptors: Group the small monsters and hit the entire cluster with Q.
- Murk Wolves: Focus the large wolf while letting passive area damage finish the small wolves.
- Blue Sentinel (Blue Buff) and Gromp: Clear the Sentinel, then drag Gromp toward the river to minimize travel time.
- Rift Scuttler: Contest the river crab with Spectral Maw (W) to break its shield with crowd control.
For early ganks, cast Harrowed Path (E) along lane walls. The black mist expands along the terrain, granting bonus attack speed, movement speed, and camouflage. Charge your W while moving inside the mist, then release the dash stun onto an overextended target. Follow immediately with an auto-Q-auto sequence to force the enemy to burn Flash or secure the kill.
Core Item Build
Viego relies on a hybrid setup of Spellblade burst, on-hit damage, and defensive survivability to survive skirmishes until he triggers his first reset.
| Item Slot | Item Choice | Primary Function |
|---|---|---|
| First Core | Trinity Force or Divine Sunderer | Spellblade proc damage triggered between Q casts and basic attacks |
| Second Core | Blade of the Ruined King | Attack speed, current-health damage, and movement-speed siphon |
| Defensive Core | Sterak's Gage | Lifeline shield preventing burst deaths before securing a takedown |
| Armor Option | Death's Dance | Defers physical burst into bleed damage, which clears on takedown |
| Magic Resist | Maw of Malmortius | Magic damage shield against heavy burst ability power champions |
| Utility Cap | Guardian Angel | Revives your champion to sustain momentum during late-game sieges |
Build Divine Sunderer against compositions with two or more high-health tanks to gain percent-health damage and healing in prolonged fights. Choose Trinity Force when facing squishy, mobile compositions that require higher base attack speed and rotation speed. Blade of the Ruined King is your core second purchase, synergizing directly with Viego's double-strike passive.
Teamfight Possession Loop
Viego’s passive, Sovereign's Domination, spawns a wraith whenever an enemy champion dies within a few seconds of taking damage from him. Possessing a wraith heals Viego for a percentage of the enemy's maximum health, grants brief untargetability, replaces his basic abilities with the victim's kit, and provides a free recast of his ultimate, Heartbreaker (R).
Execute the possession sequence using these rules:
- Wait out primary crowd control: Do not initiate teamfights. Viego has no built-in damage reduction. Wait for your team's frontline to absorb binding and stun abilities before engaging.
- Target isolated or low-health enemies: Flank the perimeter and dive an overextended target to guarantee the initial takedown.
- Use untargetability to dodge burst: Stepping into a wraith briefly removes Viego from target acquisition. Time your possession pickup to disjoint incoming projectiles, turret shots, or high-damage ultimate abilities.
- Dump host cooldowns immediately: Cast the possessed champion's basic crowd control and damage skills instantly, then recast Heartbreaker to re-enter your own form, execute the next target, and reposition.
Contesting Dragon and Rift Herald
When securing neutral monsters, cast Harrowed Path along the inner rim of the pit. The mist conceals your engagement angle and masks whether you are bursting the objective or waiting to ambush approaching opponents.
Do not use Heartbreaker to start an objective. Save the ultimate for missing-health execute damage. Pair Smite directly with the impact of Heartbreaker to create an instant burst threshold that prevents the enemy jungler from out-smiting you. If a contest collapses, turn immediately onto the lowest-health enemy champion, claim the wraith to trigger untargetability and healing, and use the free ultimate reset to jump out of the pit.

Nice guide. I am checking the other League of Legends: Wild Rift articles next.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
This helped me understand strategy much better.
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
