To win Baron Lane as Volibear in League of Legends: Wild Rift, trade around short ability rotations that stack your passive attack speed and set up multiple casts of Frenzied Maul. Volibear wins lane by absorbing counter-damage with shields, executing wounded targets, and using his ultimate to neutralize enemy turrets for low-risk dives.

Skill Leveling Priority

Level Volibear's abilities in this order:

  1. Frenzied Maul (Skill 2): Maximize first. It is your primary trading and sustain tool. The first bite applies a wounded mark; a second bite on a wounded target deals bonus damage based on missing health and restores a portion of your own health. Maxing it quickly lowers its cooldown, enabling two casts during a single trade.
  2. Sky Splitter (Skill 3): Maximize second to increase your defensive shield capacity and slow strength.
  3. Thundering Smash (Skill 1): Maximize last. One early point provides the necessary movement speed burst and single-target stun.
  4. Stormbringer (Ultimate): Put points into this skill whenever it becomes available.

Managing the Relentless Storm Passive

Volibear's auto-attacks and abilities generate stacks of Relentless Storm, granting bonus attack speed. At maximum stacks, basic attacks unleash chain lightning that arcs to nearby targets.

While this lightning helps you push waves quickly and win extended trades, it will passively damage minions. If you need to freeze the wave outside your turret or deny an opponent farm, refrain from basic attacking to let the lightning stacks fall off.

Trading and Ability Combos

Do not cast Sky Splitter directly on top of an enemy in neutral footing, as its delay allows them to walk out of the zone before it impacts. Instead, buffer the ability ahead of your engage.

Execute trades in this order:

  1. Cast Sky Splitter along the opponent's expected retreat path.
  2. Activate Thundering Smash to gain bonus movement speed toward the target.
  3. Land the stun with your empowered attack inside the Sky Splitter perimeter.
  4. Apply Frenzied Maul while the lightning bolt lands, simultaneously slowing the target, dealing damage, and granting yourself a shield that absorbs minion damage.
  5. Weave basic attacks to trigger Relentless Storm lightning while waiting for Frenzied Maul to refresh.
  6. Cast the second Frenzied Maul to heal and execute the wounded target.

If the opponent retreats after the initial stun, do not pursue them through a large enemy wave. Step back with your shield active, let your cooldowns recover, and re-engage before the wounded debuff expires.

Executing Turret Dives with Stormbringer

Stormbringer makes Volibear unstoppable during his leap, grants bonus maximum health and attack range, slows enemies in the landing zone, and disables enemy turrets for a short window.

To execute a dive without dying:

  • Push a large allied minion wave into the enemy turret before committing.
  • Chip the enemy champion below half health using standard stun and shield trades.
  • Bait out enemy defensive summoner spells or hard crowd control before using your leap.
  • Aim the impact zone so the outer perimeter touches the turret while the center lands directly on the defending champion.

The turret disable lasts only a few seconds. If the enemy champion does not die before the disable ends, the turret will immediately lock onto you with ramped-up damage if you are the closest champion dealing damage. Save Stormbringer for dives or critical shutdowns rather than using it for damage in open-field duels.

Core Itemization

Volibear scales effectively with health, attack damage, ability haste, and resistances. Because both Frenzied Maul and Sky Splitter gain value from bonus health, avoid building pure damage items.

Item SlotChoicePurpose
First CoreDivine Sunderer or Trinity ForceDivine Sunderer shreds high-health tanks; Trinity Force grants attack speed to stack your passive faster against squishy duelists.
BootsPlated Steelcaps or Mercury's Treads (Protobelt or Gargoyle enchant)Provides defensive mitigation against lane damage, paired with mobility or burst-shield active effects.
Second CoreHeartsteel or RiftmakerHeartsteel builds infinite health scaling; Riftmaker provides sustained damage and healing in prolonged fights.
Third CoreSterak's GageGrants bonus health and a heavy lifeline shield to survive burst damage.
Defensive CapAmaranth Twinguard, Thornmail, or Spirit VisageTwinguard boosts resistances in combat; Thornmail counters physical healing; Spirit Visage enhances your shields and bite heals.

Teamfight and Macro Strategy

In the mid-to-late game, play as a secondary initiator and frontline disruptor rather than a primary dive tank:

  • Wait for allied setup: Jumping into an unweakened five-player team with Stormbringer leaves you vulnerable to kiting. Wait for an allied engage to lock down the enemy, then leap in to isolate key targets.
  • Peel when necessary: Use Thundering Smash to stun diving assassins off your backline carries rather than chasing distant ranged targets.
  • Mark the frontline: Apply Frenzied Maul to an enemy tank or bruiser early in a brawl so that a healing bite is immediately available when your health drops.
  • Split-push when behind: If your team cannot win 5v5 teamfights, stay in a side lane. Volibear takes down towers quickly with Relentless Storm attack speed, forcing enemies to answer you and creating space on the map for your team to secure neutral objectives.
