To clear Level 149 in Magic Sort!, dedicate one of your two empty buffer tubes to active color consolidation while keeping the second tube open as a flexible pass-through lane. Rushing to put different colors into both empty slots immediately eliminates your movement options and triggers board deadlocks.

Tube Roles and Capacity
Each tube in Level 149 has a maximum capacity of four color units. At the start of the puzzle, the board provides multiple mixed tubes and two fully empty buffer tubes.
| Tube Type | Starting State | Role in Solving |
|---|---|---|
| Mixed Tubes | 4 stacked, multi-colored units | Source of buried colors; primary targets to empty completely |
| Active Buffer Tube | Empty (4 open units) | Dedicated holding lane to gather the stage's most exposed color |
| Transit Buffer Tube | Empty (4 open units) | Temporary pass-through space; must keep at least 2 open units |
| Completed Tube | 4 matching color units | Locked container; cannot accept or transfer liquid |

Step 1: Scan Surface Layers and Commit an Anchor Color
Before pouring, scan the top visible layer across all starting bottles:
- Identify the color unit that appears most frequently on the surface.
- Pour those matching top layers into your first empty buffer tube.
- Check the exposed second layer of each bottle you just poured from. If any revealed color matches an exposed surface layer in another tube, combine them immediately.
- Leave the second buffer tube empty during this opening sequence. Splitting two different colors into both empty tubes on turn one eliminates your ability to shuffle single blockers.
---
Step 2: Empty a Starting Tube to Create a Third Buffer
Your immediate early-game objective is to completely drain one mixed bottle down to its base.
- Prioritize mixed tubes that have only two color segments over tubes with four fragmented single units.
- Once an original tube is fully emptied, you gain a third working buffer lane.
- Having three operational buffer lanes gives you enough head room to gather four full units of an anchor color and lock in your first completed bottle.
---
Step 3: Mid-Puzzle Layer Routing and Space Management
Mid-stage failure occurs when colors become fragmented across too many bottles. Keep your tubes organized using three rules:
- Consolidate split colors immediately: Avoid holding the same color in three separate bottles (such as two units in one tube and single units in two others). Merge them into a single stack as soon as an opening appears.
- Preserve transit head room: Never leave your transit buffer tube with more than two units of an unfinishable color. You need at least two units of empty space to route blocker layers out of the way.
- Complete full sets: Whenever a move allows you to pour a matching stack directly onto another to reach four units, take it. Locking a tube removes that color set from the active board.
---
Step 4: Clear the Base Layers
After locking two completed tubes, focus on the remaining mixed stacks:
- Target the mixed tube with the fewest remaining colors.
- Transfer its top layers into your consolidated stacks or transit lane until its bottom color is exposed.
- Move the exposed bottom units into their matching holding tube to lock another full set.
- Use the newly emptied bottle to catch the final single-layer remnants, then pour each remaining color into its final four-unit container.
