The Open Job Advancement feature in MapleStory M allows you to permanently switch your character's class to another option within the same job group without losing your overall level or accumulated progression. Introduced via developer updates, this system provides a way to adjust to meta shifts or personal playstyle preferences without starting a new character from scratch.
System Rules and Job Group Restrictions
Open Job Advancement does not allow unrestricted swapping across the entire character roster. You can only transition between classes that belong to the same job branch.
- Allowed: Swapping from one Explorer class to another compatible Explorer class.
- Restricted: Cross-branch transfers, such as changing an Explorer into a Resistance character.
This change permanently updates your active skill trees, job-specific passives, and combat mechanics. Because your base level remains intact, your primary progression and account-wide investment carry over directly to the target class.
Preparation and Resource Requirements
Before executing a job swap in the job advancement menu, complete the following preparation steps:
- Acquire the Required Ticket or Currency: Job swapping requires spending specific event currency or possessing a Job Advancement Ticket. Check the active event shop or menu requirements before initiating the change.
- Audit Your Inventory: Move or sell class-exclusive consumables and equipment that your target class cannot use.
- Complete Active Locks and Dungeons: Finish your daily boss runs, weekly dungeons, and ongoing growth mission tasks before swapping. This prevents eligibility issues or lockouts caused by changing your class identity mid-reset.
Gear Retention and Post-Swap Adjustments
Your hard-earned equipment—including high-tier gear like Necro or Arcane Umbra items, refined stats, and soul enhancements—remains intact on your character during the transition. However, transitioning to a new class requires several manual adjustments:
- Stat Optimization: Different classes prioritize different secondary stats and damage modifiers. You may need to re-roll equipment potential lines or reconfigure souls to match your new class's offensive needs.
- Skill Allocation: Hyper skills and standard skill points reset or redistribute upon advancing. Manually reassign your skill points and setup hotkeys before entering combat.
- Rotation Adjustments: Defensive utilities, iframe windows, and party buffs differ by class. Practice your new class skill rotations in lower-risk content before attempting high-level bossing.
