To build a successful swarm army in Northgard Battlegrounds, fill all available deployment slots with low-cost melee units during the early rounds and select flat combat buffs over expensive solo carries. A high body count overwhelms single-target defenders, absorbs high-damage single hits across cheap targets, and secures early round wins to protect your health pool.

Unit Roles and Composition

A swarm warband requires an even split between disposable frontline fighters, durable anchors, and fast secondary attackers.

Unit TypeWarband RoleTactical PriorityPlacement
Basic WarriorsFrontline bufferAbsorbs initial aggro and blocks enemy carriesFront center row
Shield BearersArmor anchorAbsorbs burst abilities and cleave attacksFront edges or point
Axe ThrowersSustained ranged DPSDelivers continuous damage from safetySecond row behind tanks
Beasts / WolvesSpeed flankersPaths around lines to eliminate glass cannonsFlanking perimeter tiles
War Chief / BerserkerCleave carry & auraProvides buffs and damages clustered targetsSecond row, off-center

Basic Warriors serve as expendable shields that keep high-value combatants alive long enough to cycle their attacks. Slot one or two Shield Bearers into the frontline to prevent enemy area-of-effect cleaves from wiping out unarmored recruits. Place Axe Throwers directly behind your defensive wall to whittle down armored targets, and recruit Beasts or Wolves whenever they appear in the shop to target vulnerable backline units.

Board Positioning

Deploy units in a wide, staggered line across the board rather than packing them into a tight cluster. Dense formations are vulnerable to wide melee sweeps and area-of-effect skills. A broad line forces enemy units to split their aggro instead of locking down your entire squad at once.

  1. Place your core Warriors in the center: Position basic melee fighters in the middle of the front line so advancing enemies engage them first.
  2. Set Shield Bearers on the edges: Anchor the outer rim of your frontline to absorb enemy sweeps.
  3. Stagger backline attackers: Place Axe Throwers and your War Chief or Berserker in the second row, offset from the primary frontline clusters.
  4. Position flankers on perimeter tiles: Place Wolves or fast melee brawlers on the far wings, slightly behind the main line. When the round begins, enemy units will collapse toward the center, allowing your wing units to wrap around and attack unprotected ranged units directly.

Lore Perks and Synergy Priorities

Choose upgrades and equipment that provide flat stat boosts across your entire roster or activate when friendly units die:

  • Flat stat bonuses: Prioritize flat attack power increases, bonus attack speed, and movement buffs. Flat increases scale heavily when multiplied across a full board of attacking units, outperforming percentage-based defense buffs.
  • On-death triggers: Select perks that grant rage, increased attack speed, or bonus gold whenever a friendly combatant falls. Because cheap frontline units die frequently, these triggers ensure your remaining core units grow stronger as each round proceeds.

Economy and Rerolling Rules

Swarm strategies require an aggressive spending curve rather than hoarding gold for late-game interest:

  • Fill deployment slots every round: Never leave board slots empty to save gold. If synergy units are not available in the shop, purchase generic combatants to maintain numerical superiority.
  • Reroll for two-star upgrades in the mid-game: Spend gold to find duplicates of your existing frontline units. Combining them into two-star upgrades increases base survivability without reducing your total unit count.
  • Avoid hunting late-game carries: Do not waste gold aggressively rolling for rare, high-tier units until your frontline duplicates and deployment slots are fully stabilized.
