To beat Chapter 2: Foothold in the Northgard campaign, you must secure an early food and wood economy, survive the winter penalties, and eliminate the surrounding wolf dens using Brand and a small squad of Warriors.

Step 1: Scout Adjacent Tiles and Establish Raw Resources

Construct a Scout Camp immediately using your starting villagers, assign two Scouts, and reveal all tiles adjacent to your Town Hall before colonizing any land. Expanding blindly wastes Food because each colonized zone increases the cost of your next territorial expansion.

Target your early expansion toward zones with natural resources:

  • Forest zones: Place a Woodcutter’s Lodge here to secure firewood for construction and winter heating. Keep two Woodcutters assigned constantly.
  • Natural food nodes: Colonize tiles with deer or fish to construct a Hunter’s Lodge or Fishery. Specialized gathering buildings yield reliable food supplies that unassigned villagers cannot match.
  • Wolf borders: Identify which adjacent sectors harbor wolf dens so you can track incoming predator incursions into your civilian territory.

Step 2: Maintain Population Cap and Clan Happiness

Your Town Hall halts villager births if your current population reaches your housing maximum or if clan Happiness drops to zero or below.

  1. Build Houses before hitting the cap: Construct additional housing while you still have free slots. Waiting until housing is full stalls workforce growth.
  2. Build a Healer's Hut early: Wounded villagers suffer production penalties and reduce clan sentiment. Assign Healers to mend injured workers before returning them to work.
  3. Prevent border incursions: Keep hostile wildlife out of occupied zones to prevent civilian casualties and maintain productivity.

Step 3: Clear Wolf Dens with Brand and Warriors

Wolves will continually raid your territory until their dens are cleared. Once your food and wood income stabilizes, build a Training Camp and convert two to three villagers into Warriors to accompany your hero, Brand.

When engaging wolf dens, follow this combat sequence:

  1. Send Brand into the target sector first so his higher defense and health pool absorb the initial wolf attacks.
  2. Move your Warriors in immediately after Brand secures aggro, focusing attacks on one wolf at a time.
  3. Micro-manage low-health Warriors by moving them back across your border before taking lethal damage.
  4. Eliminate all remaining wolves on the tile to permanently neutralize the den.
  5. Retract Brand and surviving Warriors to your territory to let your Healers patch them up, avoiding the need to spend extra Food and Krowns on replacement troops.

Step 4: Prepare for Winter and Finish the Mission

Winter sharply reduces food gathering and increases firewood upkeep across your clan. In late autumn, halt unnecessary territory colonization and pause troop recruitment, as idle military units consume food without producing supplies.

Aim to enter winter with 150 to 200 Food stockpiled. If your reserves drop below 50 Food during the freeze, reassign Scouts or builders back to basic villager gathering duties. After weathering the winter and securing your supply lines, march Brand and your fully healed Warriors to clear the remaining mission targets and secure your foothold.
