To win a 1v7 match against Hard bots in Northgard, you must funnel incoming enemy attacks into reinforced chokepoints, rely on on-demand militia drafting rather than standing armies, and wipe out adjacent clans one by one immediately after their assaults fail.
Hard bots receive substantial passive resource bonuses, allowing them to rebuild forces far quicker than human players. Expanding symmetrically or attempting to match bot production across multiple borders leads to economic exhaustion. Victory depends on running a compact territory and exploiting predictable AI pathfinding.
Secure Perimeter Chokepoints Early
During Year 800 and early Year 801, your immediate scouting goal is locating natural geographic boundaries—such as cliffs, narrow passes, and neutral monster zones—that limit entry routes into your Town Hall.
- Limit contact zones: Colonize only tiles that restrict your defensive front to one or two choke areas.
- Leave exposed tiles unclaimed: If an outlying tile borders three different AI territories, do not colonize it. You can clear its hostile wildlife for Lore and experience, but leaving it neutral prevents multiple clans from opening separate invasion routes into your core.
- Funnel attack waves: Restricting enemy access forces multiple bot armies through the same border tile, allowing one defensive garrison and tower setup to handle incoming waves.
Exploit AI Targeting and Retreat Triggers
Hard bots follow rigid targeting and morale logic that you can manipulate to win battles inside your territory with minimal unit losses.
- Anchor threat on buildings: Place your Defense Tower toward the center-rear of your border tile. Enemy armies prioritize attacking military buildings and defensive structures before player units positioned behind the front line. Allow the AI warband to lock its aggro onto the tower or a military camp.
- Bodyblock with durable units: Once the enemy engages the structure, move your Warchief and Shield Bearers into the entry path behind the attacking force. Units have physical collision, allowing you to trap enemy troops within your tile.
- Punish retreat thresholds: Hard AI units attempt to disengage and flee back across their borders once their health drops below roughly 20%. Trapping them with melee bodyblocking or finishing them with ranged Axe Throwers prevents them from returning to friendly territory to heal.
Upgrade and Tech Priorities
Because Hard AI factions bypass baseline resource production limits, attempting to match their economic sprawl is ineffective. Focus Stone, Krowns, and Lore on defensive durability and military infrastructure.
| Structure / Upgrade | Resource Cost | Strategic Function |
|---|---|---|
| Town Hall | 100 Wood, 50 Krowns, 15 Stone | Increases maximum Villager arrival rates and unlocks critical building upgrades. |
| Perimeter Defense Tower | 50 Wood, 10 Stone (upgrade) | Absorbs enemy opening attacks, adds passive firepower, and anchors AI aggro. |
| Food Silo | 60 Wood, 5 Stone (upgrade) | Maximizes food yields on production tiles to sustain warband recruitment during winter. |
| Military Camp | Cost varies by unit, 10 Stone (upgrade) | Raises maximum warband capacity without consuming extra building slots. |
For your Lore progression, prioritize technologies that enhance combat power on home territory:
- Defensive Strategy: Increases tower resistance and defensive attack capabilities.
- Weaponsmith: Increases overall military unit attack power.
Avoid spending early Stone on non-essential economic buildings, and bypass trade-focused Lore until your perimeter defenses are stabilized.
Run a Peacetime Drafting Economy
Maintaining a large standing army year-round drains Food and Krowns, leaving you vulnerable during winter blizzards. In peacetime, your standing military should consist solely of your Warchief and assigned Healers behind upgraded Defense Towers.
- Rely on Villagers: Keep your excess population working as Villagers, Woodcutters, and Merchants. Unassigned Villagers collect Food and generate Krowns while remaining instantly available for military service.
- Cluster your camps: Build three to four military camps within a single interior military zone.
- Draft on demand: When an AI warband crosses into an adjacent border sector, convert 6 to 10 Villagers into Warriors or Axe Throwers immediately.
- Demobilize or counter-attack: Defeat the invasion under your tower's aura. Once the threat is cleared, heal surviving units and immediately send healthy troops back into production roles, or divert the surviving warband directly into an offensive counter-push.
Eliminate Bots Sequentially
A 1v7 match cannot be won purely on defense; you must systematically remove opponents from the map. When a bot loses its Warchief and full military wave at your border, it enters a recovery window of approximately 60 to 90 seconds before it can mount a functional defense.
Select the closest bordered clan and counter-attack immediately following its defeated siege. March directly to the enemy Town Hall tile, ignoring secondary economic zones and peripheral buildings along the way. Focus all damage on the Town Hall itself. Destroying the Town Hall instantly eliminates that faction, clearing all of its controlled tiles and permanently removing attack pressure from that flank.

Nice guide. I am checking the other Northgard articles next.
This saved me time in the early game.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
This guide answered the exact question I had.
