To play the Snake Clan (Svafnir) effectively in Northgard, rush Signy onto the field immediately, keep enemy borders under constant Skirmisher harassment, and rely on military Lore rather than domestic expansion. The Snake Clan does not generate Fame or build Altars. Instead, your win condition centers on keeping your territory compact, converting border friction into Kröwns, and finishing games once Signy's late-game abilities unlock.
Rush Signy Before the First Winter
Recruiting Signy as early as possible dictates the pace of the entire match. Signy gains power and unlocks new active abilities—culminating in Scorched Earth—by aging each year, so every month of delay pushes back your strongest power spikes.
To get Signy out before defensive towers appear on opposing borders:
- Build a Scout Camp immediately and reveal adjacent tiles with your starting Scout.
- Construct a Woodcutter’s Lodge alongside basic food gathering to stabilize baseline supplies.
- Funnel early Kröwns and resources directly into a Training Camp.
Do not leave Signy idle inside your borders once recruited. Her baseline combat strength clears contested wolf and draugr tiles without requiring you to turn multiple villagers into warriors, preserving your domestic workforce for food, wood, and Kröwn generation.
Harass Borders with Skirmishers
Skirmishers are the core military unit of the Snake Clan. They have lower durability than standard Warriors, but they compensate with superior movement speed, poison damage, and the ability to traverse neutral and hostile territory without drawing neutral aggro. Never commit Skirmishers to symmetrical, head-on brawls. Use asymmetric hit-and-run raids instead:
- Strike unfortified production tiles: Infiltrate unprotected farming or woodcutting zones rather than attacking a fortified Town Hall. Killing two or three workers forces a severe early economic stall.
- Bait defensive conversions: Step onto an enemy border tile to force your rival to pay food and Kröwns for military conversions, then immediately retreat across the border before taking damage.
- Kite pursuing defenders: Skirmisher attacks apply poison that slows enemy movement and deals damage over time. Micro your units backward so the poison chips away health while enemies chase.
- Deny expansion: Station Signy and a pair of Skirmishers next to neutral tiles your opponent wants to colonize, forcing them to dedicate resources to an escort army before expanding.
Snake Lore and Stolen Lore Priorities
Because the Snake Clan cannot build an Altar of Kings or earn Fame victories, your long-term scaling relies entirely on standard tech progression and the Stolen Lore mechanic. Tailor your Lore selections to maintain combat pressure and stabilize your income:
| Lore Pick | Strategic Function | Recommended Timing |
|---|---|---|
| Sharp Weapons / Military Path | Grants flat combat stat increases to Signy and Skirmishers. | Take first to strengthen early map clearing and skirmishing. |
| Under Pressure | Generates Kröwns and Happiness based on enemy military units. | Take early when bordering aggressive clans or standing armies. |
| Black Market | Increases commercial Kröwn income and reduces rival trade efficiency. | Take during prolonged stalemates or attrition matches. |
| Stolen Lore: Monster Slayer | Provides a heavy damage multiplier against beasts and neutral giants. | Prioritize when facing the Bear Clan or clearing Jotunn camps. |
| Stolen Lore: Weaponsmith | Boosts the attack power of your upgraded military units. | Take before launching your decisive mid-to-late-game assault. |
Maintain a Compact Guerrilla Economy
Do not attempt to match the territorial footprint of boom clans. A wide empire increases food costs for colonization and creates defensive liabilities.
- Hold three to four tiles: Maintain a tight border with upgraded production buildings. A small footprint lowers colonization food requirements and lets your military respond quickly to threats.
- Fund upkeep through combat: Rely on Under Pressure to generate Kröwns and Happiness by keeping your units stationed along contested borders.
- Respect winter penalties: Avoid launching attacks during winter, when combat and supply penalties escalate. Pull wounded Skirmishers back to heal, reassign them to passive gathering, and stockpile food and wood for an early spring offensive.
Close Matches with Scorched Earth
Once Signy reaches maturity, Scorched Earth provides the offensive power needed to crack fortified zones. Casting Scorched Earth on an enemy tile strips its defensive bonuses, debuffs defending units, and permanently impairs the tile's resource output.
To execute the final push:
- Target the enemy's primary food tile or fortified defensive hub with Scorched Earth.
- Advance with an upgraded company of Skirmishers led by Signy.
- Direct your frontline damage onto defensive towers while Skirmishers cut down retreating workers.
- Let poison and Scorched Earth debuffs prevent efficient trades by the defending army, then dismantle production buildings to starve out the remaining territory.

This saved me time in the early game.
Good guide for Northgard players. The early game part was useful.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
The explanation is clear, especially for beginners.
