To defeat Scurrius the Rat King in Old School RuneScape, enter his lair in the Varrock Sewers with at least 43 Prayer and base 50 combat stats. Keep Protect from Melee active as your default overhead prayer while fighting in melee distance, switch prayers to counter his ranged and magic telegraphs before projectiles land, step off shadowed tiles to dodge falling ceiling rubble, and quickly eliminate his summoned giant rats.
Recommended Stats and Gear Setup
A minimum of 43 Prayer is required to activate Protect from Melee, Protect from Missiles, and Protect from Magic. Base 50 to 60 combat stats are recommended for solo encounters, though lower-level players can learn mechanics in the public mass instance. Scurrius has low defensive stats across all styles, making melee, ranged, and magic equally viable for your first kill.
- Melee: Helm of Neitiznot, Rune Platebody, Rune Platelegs, Dragon Scimitar, Dragon Boots, and an Amulet of Glory or Fury.
- Ranged: Black Dragonhide body and chaps, Rune Crossbow with Broad or Adamant Bolts, and an Ava's Accumulator.
- Magic: Mystic robes with an Iban's Staff or Chaos Gauntlet-boosted Bolt spells to maintain a high magic attack bonus.
- Inventory: Two to three Prayer Potions, relevant combat boost potions (such as a Super Combat or Magic Potion), high-healing food like sharks or karambwans, a stamina or energy potion, and an emergency teleport tablet.
Scurrius Attack Animations and Prayer Cues
Scurrius rotates between all three combat styles throughout the encounter. You have roughly two game ticks to identify his attack animation and switch to the correct overhead prayer.
| Attack Style | Visual Cue | Defensive Prayer | Handling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Melee | Snaps forward with a bite or claw swipe | Protect from Melee | Keep active as default within melee range; deals instant damage. |
| Ranged | Rears backward and flings ceiling debris | Protect from Missiles | Switch as soon as the projectile leaves his model. |
| Magic | Channels a blue lightning spark | Protect from Magic | Switch before the electrical orb reaches your tile. |
Because ranged and magic attacks have projectile travel times, wait for the animation to start before swapping prayers. Once the projectile hits, switch back to Protect from Melee if you remain in close quarters.
Dodging Rubble and Boss Phases
Scurrius introduces two major environmental mechanics during the fight:
- Falling Rubble: Scurrius periodically screeches and slams the ground, creating brown shadows on the floor. Step off any marked tile immediately. Rubble deals heavy typeless damage and briefly stuns your character if it hits, preventing defensive prayer switches against follow-up boss attacks.
- Food Piles: Scurrius will occasionally disengage and run to food piles along the arena perimeter to restore health. He does not attack while eating. Use this window to deal uninterrupted damage, drink stat-boosting potions, or restore hitpoints without missing defensive prayer swaps.
Handling Giant Rat Minions
During combat, Scurrius summons several small giant rats that target the player with rapid melee attacks. These minions bypass active overhead protection prayers and will deplete your food if ignored.
Each summoned rat has only six hitpoints. Defeat them immediately using fast weapon attacks or multi-target spells before returning your focus to Scurrius.
Crafting Bone Weapons
Scurrius drops an untradeable Scurrius Spine. Take this spine to Historian Aldo in the Varrock Sewers along with basic crafting materials to craft a Bone Mace, Bone Shortbow, or Bone Staff.
Bone weapons provide a flat +15 max hit bonus against Scurrius and other rat-type monsters. This bonus guarantees one-shot kills on the summoned rat minions and substantially increases kill speeds, raising solo combat training rates to 110,000–140,000 XP per hour.
