To unlock Peddler as a playable hero in Otherworld Legends, you must provoke and defeat him in combat inside a dungeon shop room. Striking him repeatedly triggers a duel, locking the exits until one of you falls. Winning the fight unlocks Peddler on your lobby roster and lets you take all three items currently on display for free.
How to Trigger the Peddler Duel
Peddler normally operates peaceful item shops during a run, selling three weapons or passive items for gold. To initiate the unlock fight:
- Clear the stage combat rooms first. Collect your baseline gold, items, and secondary skills before entering the shop so you are not at base stats.
- Inspect the shop inventory. Ensure the three items on sale are worth the risk of an unexpected death or disrupted future shops.
- Position away from corners. Stand at mid-range in an open section of the room rather than pinned against walls or rugs.
- Attack Peddler directly. Hit him 3 to 5 times with basic attacks or skills until his red boss health bar appears and room barriers raise.
Once the fight begins, you cannot flee or reset the room. If Peddler defeats you, your run ends immediately.
Peddler Attack Patterns and Combat Tactics
Peddler fights as an aggressive boxer with high burst damage, fast movement, and heavy stagger. The small shop room makes positioning your primary survival check.
- Sprint Charge: Peddler winds up and charges straight across the room with an extended horizontal hitbox. Dodge vertically (up or down) instead of backing away in a straight line.
- Close-Range Flurry: Lingering directly in front of Peddler triggers rapid-fire punches that can deplete armor and health rapidly. Disengage immediately after landing your attacks.
- Recovery Phase: After completing an attack string or charge, Peddler pauses for roughly 1.5 seconds. Use this window to land your burst damage, then retreat before he recovers.
Hero Matchups for Beating Peddler
Mobile and ranged characters handle Peddler's aggressive melee tracking best.
| Hero | Recommended Setup | Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| Katherine | Blizzard or Thunder skill variants | Cast persistent area spells across the shop floor and kite along the room edges while elemental ticks wear him down. |
| Ginzo | Hissatsu: Tsubame Gaeshi or Shooting Stars | Use invulnerability frames to dash through his straight charge, then attack from behind during his recovery. |
| Quan Huying | Tiger's Charge or Shadow Strike | Time skill invulnerability frames against his rush and knock him down repeatedly to disrupt his flurries. |
For the lowest execution risk on an early account, use Katherine to maintain distance and circle the perimeter without trading melee hits.
Consequences of Defeating the Merchant
Winning the encounter yields immediate rewards but impacts the rest of your run:
- Instant Rewards: Peddler drops gold upon defeat, and all three items displayed in the shop can be picked up without paying gold.
- Lobby Unlock: Overcoming him registers the unlock requirement, making Peddler available for selection in the Mirage lobby.
- Subsequent Shop Disruption: Defeating Peddler removes or disrupts normal merchant services in subsequent shop rooms for that specific run, limiting your ability to spend leftover gold on curated builds later.
Because of this disruption and Peddler's high damage output, avoid triggering the fight on Stage 1-1 with zero items. Challenge him later in Scene 1 or during Scene 2 once you have accumulated enough armor recovery, crowd control, or burst damage to win reliably.

Nice guide. I am checking the other Otherworld Legends articles next.
Can you add more details about strategy in a future update?
This helped me understand strategy much better.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
