To defeat high-density Zombie Chicken swarms in Plants vs. Zombies™ 2, deploy multi-target or piercing electric attackers such as Lightning Reed and Electric Peashooter. Avoid single-target burst plants like Electric Blueberry, which cannot cycle fast enough to stop hundreds of incoming targets.
Why Zombie Chickens Overwhelm Standard Attacks
Zombie Chickens spawn in large numbers when a Chicken Wrangler Zombie takes damage. While each chicken dies in a single hit from almost any source, their high movement speed and sheer volume quickly overwhelm standard straight-firing plants. Single-target projectile plants like Peashooter or Repeater strike only the lead entity, allowing the rest of the flock to run past unchecked. High-damage lobbed or explosive plants like Melon-Pult or Coconut Cannon waste excess damage on individual chickens and suffer long reload intervals, leaving defense lines exposed between shots.
Overcoming these swarms requires zero projectile latency, piercing damage, or wide multi-lane arcing.
Electric Plant Performance Against Swarms
Electric plants vary drastically in how they distribute damage across large crowds.
| Plant | Attack Mechanic | Swarm Effectiveness | Role Against Chickens |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lightning Reed | 3-lane vertical tracking, instant chain lightning hitting up to 3 targets | High | Inexpensive baseline attacker; hits instantly across adjacent lanes |
| Electric Peashooter | Penetrating orb firing down a single lane with area sparks | Very High | Pierces entire columns; wipes out straight swarms in one shot |
| Electric Currant | Continuous damage fence formed between two connected plants | High | Passive barrier; shreds rushing chickens on contact |
| Electric Blueberry | High-damage lethal cloud striking one target at long intervals | Extremely Low | Fails against swarms; wastes long cooldowns on single low-health chickens |
Lightning Reed
Lightning Reed costs 125 Sun and fires instant hitscan electrical arcs across its own lane and adjacent lanes. Because the arc jumps between up to three targets at base level without projectile travel time, it cannot miss fast-moving targets. While an isolated reed can be overwhelmed by hundreds of chickens rushing simultaneously, stacking two to three reeds in a vertical column overlaps their attack cadences and clears the lane front continuously. Activating Plant Food on Lightning Reed summons a roaming thundercloud that tracks targets and strikes clusters across the entire lawn.
Electric Peashooter
Electric Peashooter fires a penetrating electrical orb that travels down a full lane without stopping upon hitting an enemy. As the orb travels, it discharges sparks to adjacent tiles. Against dense chicken lines, a single shot can wipe out an entire lane because the piercing projectile hits every chicken in its path.
Electric Currant
Electric Currant creates an active electrical fence when two units are placed in the same row or column. Chickens disintegrate immediately upon contacting the fence. This barrier does not spend ammunition or incur firing delays, but it depends on the survival of both end nodes. If chickens break through and eat either plant, the entire circuit deactivates.
Electric Blueberry
Electric Blueberry deals lethal damage designed for heavy targets like Gargantuars, but it targets only one zombie at a time and has a long recharge delay. When facing a chicken swarm, it expends its entire attack cycle on a single fragile target while the rest of the horde bypasses it. Do not rely on Electric Blueberry for swarm defense.
Recommended Defensive Setup
To clear chicken swarms efficiently, arrange your electric network using the following steps:
- Center your Lightning Reeds: Plant Lightning Reeds in rows 2, 3, and 4 first. Their three-lane vertical tracking allows them to cover the edge lanes while protecting the center of the board.
- Double up attackers per lane: Maintain at least two electric attackers per lane to eliminate attack cadence gaps where fast chickens might slip through.
- Anchor Electric Currant behind defensive plants: If using electric fences, place sturdy blocking plants like Wall-nut, Tall-nut, or Infi-nut directly in front of the Currants to prevent fast-moving chickens from chewing through the circuit nodes.
- Add slowing effects: Position chill plants such as Snow Pea or Winter Melon alongside electric attackers. Slowing the sprint speed of the chickens gives lightning arcs and piercing orbs more time to cycle before the swarm reaches your plants.
- Use Plant Food on swarm releases: When Chicken Wranglers take damage and release their flocks simultaneously, feed Plant Food to an electric plant immediately to clear the entire wave before it spreads across your defense lines.

I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
Can you add more details about strategy in a future update?
This guide answered the exact question I had.
This saved me time in the early game.
