To clear difficult post-game expeditions in Pokémon Quest without a team of high-stat Legendaries, bring a Nidoran♀ equipped with the move Flatter. Flatter boosts an enemy's Attack while inflicting Confusion. Because confusion recoil damage calculates from the target's own Attack stat alongside active buffs, endgame bosses such as Mew and Mewtwo turn their scaling stats against themselves, regularly taking upwards of 300,000 recoil damage in a single hit.
How Flatter Confusion Damage Works
Standard late-game bosses on Happenstance Island (Area 12) possess massive health pools and high base Attack values. Normal clears require extensive buff rotations, optimal Bingo bonuses, and high-tier Power Stones to slowly deplete their health.
Flatter bypasses these damage requirements:
- Casting Flatter grants the target an Attack buff and inflicts the Confusion status effect.
- When the confused boss attempts an attack, the game triggers a recoil roll.
- If the recoil roll triggers, the boss strikes itself using its boosted Attack stat, often dealing over 300,000 damage and eliminating its own health bar in one or two attacks.
How to Attract and Prepare Nidoran♀
Only female Nidoran learn Flatter; Nidoran♂ cannot learn the move. Target a Nidoran♀ that rolls with only one active move slot so you can equip three Move Stones directly to Flatter.
Use the Gold Pot whenever possible to cook these recipes, as it yields recruits with higher base stats that can withstand intermediate mob waves:
| Recipe | Quality and Ingredients | Target Recruit Pool |
|---|---|---|
| Sludge Soup a la Cube | Good or Very Good: 3 Tiny Mushroom, 1 Balm Mushroom, 1 Rainbow Matter (or 3 Tiny Mushroom, 2 Balm Mushroom) | High rate of Poison-type recruits, including Nidoran♀ |
| Grey Porridge a la Cube | Good: 5 Gray ingredients / Fossils | General gray pool with moderate odds for Nidoran♀ |
If Nidoran♀ arrives with Poison Sting or Growl, use Move Learning training with spare Pokémon until you roll Flatter. You do not need to evolve Nidoran♀ into Nidorina or Nidoqueen, as your recruit's offensive stats have no effect on the boss's self-inflicted confusion recoil.
Move Stones and Power Stone Priorities
Because damage comes entirely from the boss's recoil, configure Nidoran♀ for status uptime and defensive survival rather than Attack.
Move Stones
Attach stones that keep Confusion active and lower skill downtime:
- Stay Strong Stone (Green): Extends the duration of the status effect on the target, increasing the chances that the boss attacks itself multiple times before Confusion clears.
- Wait Less Stone (Yellow): Lowers the cooldown of Flatter, allowing you to recast the skill quickly if the boss recovers or avoids the initial roll.
Power Stones and Sub-Stats
Prioritize Health stone sockets over Attack sockets, aiming for splits such as 6 HP / 3 ATK or 7 HP / 2 ATK. Seek the following sub-stats on equipped stones:
- Resist Status Conditions (up to 100%): Prevents sleep, paralysis, or freeze from disrupting your Flatter animation.
- Hit Healing (capped at 10%): Recovers chip damage taken during intermediate stages through standard auto-attacks.
- Movement Speed Increase: Helps Nidoran♀ move into range for the short-range cast and retreat quickly during telegraphs.
Supporting Team Roles
Nidoran♀ requires two supportive teammates to handle earlier waves and ensure she reaches the boss arena safely:
- Buffer: Run a Pokémon with Bulk Up paired with three Sharing Stones (such as Machop or Mewtwo) to boost party defense and attack throughout the stage.
- Wave Clearer: Run a high-output ranged attacker (such as Hydro Pump Starmie, Psychic Alakazam, or Rock Throw Onix) to eliminate standard mob packs before they swarm Nidoran♀.
Boss Room Combat Sequence
Flatter is a short-range targeted ability that will fail if cast out of position. Follow this manual sequence upon entering the boss wave:
- Turn off auto-combat to prevent Nidoran♀ from wasting Flatter while out of range.
- Allow your buffer to cast Bulk Up and grant defensive shields to the team.
- Observe the boss and wait for an attack animation with long recovery frames.
- Command Nidoran♀ to cast Flatter while the boss is stationary.
- Tap the Scatter button immediately once the confusion icon appears over the boss.
Disengaging the team moves your units out of wide area-of-effect swings and forces the boss to start an attack animation. When the boss attacks while confused, it takes its own buffed damage and defeats itself.

This saved me time in the early game.
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
The tips are practical and easy to follow.
