To build a reliable expedition carry in Pokémon Quest, cook Onix using a targeted Stone Soup a la Cube recipe, roll for the ranged attack Rock Throw on a single-move layout, and socket support stones that double its burst and reduce its cooldown.

The Targeted Onix Recipe: Stone Soup a la Cube

Onix is attracted by cooking Stone Soup a la Cube, the Rock-type attraction dish. You can narrow the summon pool almost exclusively to Onix by cooking in a standard or bronze pot with this specific combination:

  • 2 Fossils (Small gray ingredient)
  • 2 Apricorns (Small yellow ingredient)
  • 1 Icy Rock (Precious blue ingredient)

Fossils and Apricorns drop frequently in early areas like First Steppes and Backforth Brook. If you run out of Icy Rocks, other hard mineral ingredients such as a Big Root or a Black Rock can substitute, but the 2 Fossil, 2 Apricorn, 1 Icy Rock combination offers the most reliable near-guaranteed Onix summon rate on standard and "Good" cooking qualities.

Target Layout: Single Move Slot with Three Sockets

When reviewing freshly cooked Onix, check the move layout before investing in training:

  • Ideal: An Onix with one move slot and three support stone sockets. This lets you stack three move stones on Rock Throw, dramatically raising its burst damage and clear speed.
  • Avoid: An Onix with two active move slots. Each move on a dual-skill Pokémon can only equip one support stone, which severely caps your damage output.

Onix Move Options

While Rock Throw is the primary objective for expedition clearing, Onix can roll several other moves:

MovePrimary RoleRecommended StonesTrade-offs
Rock ThrowRanged Burst DPS1x Whack-Whack, 2x Wait Less (or 1x Broad)High damage from safe range; can miss if fast enemies dash past.
HardenTeam Tank / Buffer2x or 3x Sharing StoneBoosts whole team defense when shared; provides no personal DPS.
Stealth RockHazard / Sustained DPS1x Stay Strong, 1x Wait LessStrong continuous tick damage on stationary bosses; weak against mobile mobs.
Flash CannonLinear Beam DPS1x Whack-Whack, 1x Wait LessStraight-line pierce; narrower hit coverage than Rock Throw.

Equipping Move Stones on Rock Throw

Rock Throw fires falling boulders in an arc from medium distance. Equip these support stones to maximize its output:

  1. Whack-Whack Stone (Repeat Cast): Causes Onix to fire Rock Throw a second time automatically. This adds a slight cooldown penalty but effectively doubles burst damage against boss targets and enemy waves.
  2. Wait Less Stone (Cooldown Reduction): Offsets the Whack-Whack cooldown increase, allowing Onix to cast Rock Throw every few seconds.
  3. Broad Stone (AoE Increase): Expands the impact radius of the falling boulders, improving clear consistency against packed enemy groups.

A standard setup uses one Whack-Whack Stone and two Wait Less Stones, or one Whack-Whack Stone, one Wait Less Stone, and one Broad Stone.

Power Stone Grid and Bingo Priorities

Socket Balance: Attack vs. HP

Onix has naturally high base HP. To ensure your team clears expedition stages before the stage timer expires, target an Onix with a balanced grid:

  • Target: 4 to 5 Attack (ATK) sockets and 4 to 5 Health (HP) sockets.
  • Trap: An Onix with 7 or 8 HP sockets survives easily, but its low damage output risks running out of time against late-stage bosses.

Desirable Bingo Bonuses

Bingo bonuses activate when you complete straight lines of three Power Stones in the grid. Look for bingos that reduce skill downtime or enhance Rock-type output:

  • Rock-Type Moves Wait -%: Stacking cooldown reduction allows Rock Throw to cycle almost continuously.
  • Rock-Type Moves Damage +%: Directly scales the damage of each boulder, improving single-target boss clearing.
  • Natural ATK / HP increases: Acceptable secondary choices if cooldown or damage rolls are unavailable.

How to Reroll for Rock Throw

If your Onix arrives with moves like Rock Tomb, Sandstorm, or Flash Cannon, use Move Learning training:

  1. Lock Your Target: Mark the single-move Onix that has your preferred Power Stone socket balance so it cannot be accidentally used as training fodder.
  2. Cook Duplicates: Keep cooking the standard recipe (2 Fossils, 2 Apricorns, 1 Icy Rock) using a basic cooking pot to generate duplicate Onix.
  3. Train with Same-Species Fodder: In Pokémon Quest, using an identical species as supporting material provides the highest success rate for Move Learning.
  4. Reroll Until Learned: Feed duplicate Onix one at a time into your locked target until it rolls Rock Throw.
