Portal Defense: How to Clear Nightmare Mode for the Engineer Crate

To earn the Engineer Crate in Portal Defense, you must successfully clear a match on Nightmare difficulty. Completing this challenge rewards you with the crate, which yields specialized units and upgrades designed for late-game progression.

Because Nightmare mode introduces high-density waves, armored enemy variants, and larger health pools earlier than standard stages, winning requires precise gold management, compact kill-zone positioning, and active targeting adjustments.

Gold Management and Wave Progression

Nightmare mode penalizes placing large numbers of low-level units. Investing gold into fully upgraded core towers provides significantly better penetration and damage output against tough waves than spreading resources across weak defenses.

Early Waves: Deploy low-cost, high-efficiency towers along the front line to hold initial waves. Build early crowd-control or slow-effect units to delay fast mobs while you save gold.
Mid Waves: Concentrate your gold on maxing out the upgrade tiers of your primary Area of Effect (AOE) and rapid-fire damage dealers to manage dense swarms.
