To control enemy movement in Portal Defense, place your portal entrance at the end of your primary kill zone and your portal exit at the start of the map. Position the setup mid-lane after enemies have already passed through your main tower grid. This forces incoming waves to walk through your high-damage turrets twice, giving your long-range defenses extra time to clear elite units before they reach your base wall.

Setting Up Pathing Loops

Portals override default AI navigation by offering what the game registers as a valid path to your core. Placing portals at the maximum allowed distance forces enemies into the longest possible loop back toward your base.

To execute a stable looping layout:

  1. Build your main defensive grid along the primary path near mid-lane.
  2. Place the entrance portal right after the end of that damage zone.
  3. Place the exit portal near the map spawn point or the beginning of the lane.
  4. Let the wave take initial damage, teleport back to the start, and walk through your tower grid a second time.

Avoid setting portals too close to the enemy spawn point, as this can cause units to glitch or reset their pathing.

Preventing AI Pathing Breaks

If your portal configuration creates a route the enemy AI considers blocked or excessively convoluted, units may bypass the portals entirely and rush your base via the shortest route.

Follow these placement rules to keep the AI on your intended route:

  • Maintain sightlines: Ensure a clear, unobstructed line of sight exists between your base and the portal exit.
  • Avoid terrain obstructions: Do not build portal exits behind solid structures or inaccessible walls.
  • Test early: Place portals during smaller initial waves to confirm pathing before high-density waves arrive.
  • Reset on failure: If enemies start ignoring your portals, immediately remove the furthest portal to reset the AI to standard pathing.

Managing Portal Resources and Cooldowns

Deploying and moving portals costs gold and triggers cooldown timers. Treating portals as permanent choke-point infrastructure rather than emergency escape tools saves critical currency for tower upgrades.

Save your portal redeployments for high-density waves where enemy health pools exceed your towers' baseline damage per second (DPS). If your portals are stuck on cooldown while enemies approach your core, reduce your reliance on continuous looping and invest more capital directly into tower upgrades.

Isolating Boss Waves

Boss units often ignore standard looping setups, but you can still manipulate their positioning. When a boss spawns, shift your portal strategy from wave-looping to positional isolation:

  1. Target the boss with a portal pair to drop the unit into a secondary "Containment Cell."
  2. Surround this isolated zone with high-DPS, single-target towers.
  3. Keep the main mob swarm separated from the boss so your heavy defensive abilities focus entirely on the single high-value target.
