To clear Chapter 3 Grand Teton Farm (stages 3-1 through 3-3) in Puzzles & Survival without spending money, deploy a balanced five-color team, align vertical tile matches directly beneath target enemies, and hold charged hero skills until the final wave of each stage.
Free-to-Play Team Setup and Color Roles
Run a "rainbow" formation featuring one hero of every element: Red (Brave), Green (Careful), Blue (Calm), Yellow (Passion), and Purple (Ruthless). Leaving an elemental slot empty causes tiles of that color to deal minimal damage when matched, wasting board moves during multi-wave battles.
| Hero Attribute | Combat Role | Campaign Priority in Chapter 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Red (Brave) | High damage output | Eliminates frontline walkers quickly |
| Green (Careful) | Utility and defense | Absorbs and mitigates incoming mutations |
| Blue (Calm) | Healing and support | Recovers team HP across waves (e.g., Doc Gray) |
| Yellow (Passion) | Single-target burst | Snipes isolated threats (e.g., Chester) |
| Purple (Ruthless) | Multi-target splash | Softens adjacent targets across multiple lanes |
Level your five starter heroes evenly with Antiserum before entering stage 3-1 to prevent individual heroes from falling to focused enemy attacks.
Stage 3-1: Lane Targeting and Energy Building
Tiles travel straight up their respective columns. Matches made on the edges of the board fly harmlessly past enemies if no target occupies that vertical lane.
- Match vertical columns directly underneath the center zombie cluster during the opening wave.
- Avoid activating hero skills during wave one; clear low-impact tiles under high-health targets to build hero energy bars naturally.
- Unleash charged offensive skills at the start of the final wave to defeat the strongest enemy before it executes its special strike.
Stage 3-2: Enemy Rage Control and Ghost Matching
Stage 3-2 features sturdier infected farm workers that attack more frequently. Damaging an enemy fills its rage meter, causing it to trigger special attacks sooner.
- Limit partial damage: Do not trigger loose matches against an enemy with a near-full special meter unless the strike deals lethal damage.
- Use ghost matching: Match tiles in empty vertical lanes where zombies have already been cleared. These unmatched projectiles inflict no damage, but they grant double hero energy without feeding rage to remaining enemies.
- Charge before wave three: Use ghost matches on cleared side lanes during wave two to fully charge Doc Gray and your primary attackers before the final wave starts.
Stage 3-3: Boss Targeting and Skill Sequence
Stage 3-3 ends with a durable boss walker flanked by two minions. Arriving at wave three with fully charged hero abilities is required for low-level free-to-play teams.
- Lock the boss: Manually tap the central boss walker when wave three begins to direct all single-target hero skills and projectile focus onto it.
- Apply debuffs: Fire defensive reductions or status debuffs first to weaken the boss's incoming damage resistance.
- Fire burst damage: Trigger single-target strikes directly into the boss to deplete its health bar before it can unleash its special ability.
- Clear minions: Use remaining area-of-effect hero skills and vertical matches to eliminate the side walkers.
- Time your heal: Hold Doc Gray's healing skill until after your squad absorbs the first unavoidable enemy attack, preventing wasted overheal.
What to Do If You Fail Stage 3-3
If your team is wiped out before defeating the boss, exit the stage and upgrade your base facilities. Collect Antiserum from your sanctuary production buildings and level your five core heroes to boost both their total HP pool and tile damage multipliers before re-attempting the encounter.

I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
Nice guide. I am checking the other Puzzles & Survival articles next.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
