To survive early runs and clear Chapter 1 in Ronin: The Last Samurai, prioritize depleting enemy posture over trading standard health damage, select defensive sustain skills between combat waves, and invest your starting Gold exclusively into your main weapon and chest armor.
Master Wave Defense and Conserve Onigiri
Each chapter attempt consumes Onigiri (stamina), making endurance across consecutive waves the primary factor in early account efficiency. Chapter 1 features escalating groups of enemies culminating in mini-bosses and a final boss, with minimal opportunities to heal mid-run.
- Do not spam basic attacks: Normal sword swings lock your samurai into animation frames that prevent reactive blocking, exposing you to incoming hits.
- Reset posture regularly: Holding block between strikes steadies your defense gauge. Disengage from standard melee units before your posture meter fills completely.
- Deflect rather than passive block: Standard blocking absorbs damage but builds your posture meter toward a stun. Clean, timed deflections prevent meter buildup and deal heavy posture damage back to the attacker.
In-Run Skill Selection Priorities
Defeating enemies awards experience points, opening a choice of three randomized combat scrolls between waves. Early on, defensive recovery and sustain traits provide far more run stability than flat attack percentages, which scale poorly until you upgrade base equipment.
| Skill Type | Priority | Primary Effect | Tactical Usage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Posture Recovery / Resilience | High | Speeds up posture meter depletion | Prevents guard breaks during sustained melee sequences |
| Life Drain / Health on Kill | High | Restores hit points upon defeating a foe | Compensates for chip damage without consuming revival items |
| Shockwave / Area Cleave | Medium | Emits area damage on sword strikes | Interrupts and thins grouped standard foot soldiers |
| Flat Attack Damage Buff | Low | Raises base weapon damage by a percentage | Low value early; yields better results once weapon stats scale |
If defensive sustain skills do not appear in a draft roll, select abilities with secondary crowd-control effects, such as wind cleaves or extended stun durations. These extra effects stagger approaching enemies and disrupt their attack windups.
Exploit Posture Breaks and Counter-Flash
Both your samurai and hostile targets have a Posture gauge beneath their health. Overloading an enemy's posture meter is significantly safer and faster than grinding down their HP bar through basic sword strikes.
- Watch enemy telegraphs: Deflect standard strikes at the moment of impact to quickly fill the opponent's posture meter.
- Execute Counter-Flash on red Kanji cues: When a red Kanji signal flashes above an enemy, they are preparing an unblockable thrust or charge. Tap the counter input precisely as the flash appears to execute a Counter-Flash, stopping the assault and dealing massive posture damage.
- Punish the Groggy state: Once an enemy's posture bar is filled, they enter a groggy stun. Use this opening to land critical combinations and lethal finisher strikes without risk of retaliation.
Target Prioritization in Chapter 1
Mixed enemy waves combine standard swordsmen with ranged archers and spearmen. To minimize incoming damage, eliminate high-disruption targets first:
- Ranged archers: Archers attack from the perimeter, releasing arrows that stagger your samurai and leave you open to melee strikes. While arrows can be deflected, closing distance immediately to kill archers neutralizes the hazard permanently.
- Spearmen: Spearmen utilize longer attack reach and frequent thrusting charges. Track their extended windups to trigger predictable Counter-Flash openings.
- Standard swordsmen: Clean up remaining basic melee mobs once ranged and charging threats are down.
Camp Inventory and Early Equipment Upgrades
Upon finishing the prologue tutorial, the camp interface unlocks access to initial reward chests and your inventory tab. Equip your starter Katana and defensive garments immediately before spending Onigiri on additional Chapter 1 attempts.
Direct all starting Gold into your primary Katana and chest armor:
- Katana upgrades: Raise your base attack power and the posture damage dealt by clean deflections, reducing the time spent in each wave.
- Chest armor upgrades: Increase both maximum health and your posture threshold, allowing you to absorb mistimed blocks against fast multi-hit strings.
Avoid dividing upgrade materials across alternative weapon types in your inventory until you establish a reliable farming routine in later stages. Focus all resources entirely on your active loadout.
