To defeat Gashadokuro in the Chaos Crevice event raid of Ronin: The Last Samurai, sprint away from its wide ground slams instead of standing your ground to deflect, then punish its grounded arms during recovery animations. Because Gashadokuro is a massive skeletal raid boss rather than a humanoid duelist, its sweeping attacks and shockwaves inflict heavy chip damage and posture strain even through successful guards.
Movement and Defense Strategy
Constant sprinting is your primary defense against Gashadokuro. Parrying is inefficient in this encounter because the boss does not flinch during its windups, and its impact hitboxes can instantly break your posture gauge.
- Sprint laterally or circle the perimeter: Keep moving diagonally or along the arena edge whenever an attack begins. This clears tracking hitboxes and keeps the camera positioned to read windups cleanly.
- Do not anchor or block: Guarding downward smashes drains posture without creating standard parry-counter windows.
- Avoid corner traps: Stay away from arena walls so sweeping arm arcs cannot pin your samurai against the boundary.
Recognizing Gashadokuro's Attack Patterns
Evading Gashadokuro requires identifying the boss's arm raises early and moving to safe zones before the hit registers.
- Overhead Fist Slam: The boss lifts a single arm high into the air, pauses briefly, and drives it straight down. Sprint laterally to the left or right; running straight back will keep you inside the forward shockwave line.
- Sweeping Arm Cleave: The boss drops an arm low and drags it across the arena floor. Run backward toward the far perimeter or sprint across in the direction opposite the sweep arc to stay outside its reach.
- Dual-Hand Ground Pound: Gashadokuro pulls both arms back before slamming them down together, creating a large circular shockwave in the center of the arena. Disengage immediately and sprint to the outer perimeter to escape the impact zone.
Attack Windows and Recovery Punishment
Damage against Gashadokuro must be dealt during the recovery phase immediately following a slam, when its limbs remain planted in the ground.
| Boss Action | Evasion Response | Danger Level | Punish Window |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overhead Slam | Sprint laterally away from the center line | High posture damage | 3–4 seconds on grounded arm |
| Sweeping Cleave | Retreat to perimeter or sprint opposite the swing | Knockdown / wide reach | ~2 seconds after arm rests |
| Dual-Hand Pound | Run immediately to the outer arena boundary | Lethal shockwave | 4–5 seconds on planted limbs |
Execute your counterattack using the following sequence:
- Approach the planted limb: As soon as the impact dust settles, close in on the grounded arm or hand.
- Execute a short combo: Land four to five basic attacks or activate a charged weapon skill.
- Disengage early: Back off before the boss begins retracting its arm into neutral position, as lingering next to the torso leaves you vulnerable to the next windup.
Loadout Considerations
Build your setup around movement speed and fast recovery frames rather than static block defense. Fast weapons like katanas allow you to complete short attack strings and disengage smoothly before an arm pulls back. Prioritize perks and gear that boost sprint speed, dodge mobility, and burst damage so you can maximize each grounded recovery phase while avoiding prolonged posture checks.
