In Sea of Stars, combat revolves around breaking enemy "locks"—the sequence of damage-type icons displayed above an enemy while they charge a special attack. Hitting an enemy with the matching damage type reduces the power of the incoming attack; breaking all displayed locks cancels the action entirely.
To control the battlefield, you must pair each character’s physical damage types (Slashing, Blunt, and Piercing) and elemental affinities (Sun, Moon, Arcane, and Poison) against these locks while spending Combo Points (CP) before encounters conclude.
Core Party Skills and Damage Types
Every party member covers distinct physical and elemental profiles. Managing their skills allows you to handle single-target lock sequences, wide enemy formations, and emergency party recovery.
Zale (Slashing and Sun Magic)
Zale provides concentrated single-target physical cutting and high-yield Solar magic:
- Sunball: A chargeable projectile dealing area-of-effect Sun magic damage. Releasing the button just as the orb finishes focusing maximizes damage across grouped enemies to clear stacked Sun locks.
- Dash Strike: A swift thrust inflicting both Slashing and Sun damage in a straight line, bypassing front-row targets to hit back-line enemies.
- Healing Light: A single-target healing spell that scales with Zale’s Magic Attack, offering reliable recovery when items need to be preserved.
Valere (Blunt and Moon Magic)
Valere excels at handling multiple targets and clearing dense Moon locks:
- Moonerang: A lunar projectile that bounces across all active enemies. Deflecting the projectile back with timed button inputs accelerates its speed and increases hit count, making it the most efficient skill for clearing multiple Moon locks in one turn.
- Crescent Wave: Sends a wave of Moon energy across grounded foes, dealing Blunt physical damage and Lunar damage across the entire enemy line.
- Shielding Ward: Places damage-absorbing barriers on party members to cushion both physical and magical impacts from unpreventable boss abilities.
Garl (Blunt Force and Sustain)
Garl functions as a physical brawler and party stabilizer. Because Garl has no innate elemental spells, you must boost his basic attacks with Live Mana when an enemy lock demands Sun or Moon damage paired with Blunt impact:
- Hurl: Garl throws an enemy into another target, dealing Blunt damage to both. This disrupts enemy formations and clusters targets for follow-up area attacks.
- Nourish: Garl prepares a snack to heal a single ally. It costs minimal MP and requires no inventory items, serving as your primary dungeon-crawling heal.
- Cook: A party-wide feast that restores heavy HP across all active allies after severe boss attacks.
Seraï (Piercing, Poison, and Action Delay)
Seraï is the party's primary tactical disruptor, specializing in hit counts and turn manipulation:
- Venom Flurry: Rapidly strikes an enemy with multi-hit Piercing and Poison damage. Proper timing extends the dagger strikes, quickly stripping away multi-symbol Piercing locks.
- Disorient: Deals Blunt physical damage and pushes the target's action counter back by one to two turns. Use this whenever an enemy lock sequence cannot be cleared before the countdown hits zero.
- Phase Knife: A Piercing and Arcane strike that ignores enemy defensive positioning to hit all enemies on the field.
Resh'an and B'st (Arcane Utility and Heavy Impact)
Later party additions grant access to Arcane affinities and high single-target physical force:
- Resh'an: Uses Petrichor to cleanse status ailments while restoring party HP, Abacus to deal Arcane damage and reveal target attributes, and Ebb to knock enemy turn counters back while pulling Live Mana onto the field.
- B'st: Made of living glass, B'st provides heavy Blunt attacks. Elbow Drop deals high single-target Blunt damage, Splat flattens B'st to strike full enemy lines, and Power Smash delivers heavy disruption against armored targets.
Combo Attacks and Lock-Breaking Synergy
Combo Points (CP) accumulate as your party lands regular attacks, absorbs Live Mana, and executes timed hits. Because CP resets to zero at the end of every battle, spend your points as soon as you meet lock or recovery thresholds rather than holding them.
| Combo Attack | Characters Required | CP Cost | Damage and Effects | Primary Tactical Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Solstice Strike | Zale + Valere | 1 CP | Slashing + Blunt + Sun + Moon | Instantly breaks mixed early-game lock sets |
| X-Strike | Zale + Seraï | 2 CP | Slashing + Piercing + Sun | Clears complex multi-element backline locks |
| Mending Light | Valere + Garl | 2 CP | High-tier party heal | Recovers full squad health without items |
| Soonshroom | Zale + Garl | 1 CP | Blunt + Sun displacement | Pulls scattered targets into a tight cluster |
Tactical Order for Boss Locks
When an enemy reveals a lock bar with an active countdown, follow this sequence:
- Check the Turn Counter: If the counter sits at 1 and the lock sequence requires more actions than your current turn allows, cast Seraï's Disorient or Resh'an's Ebb to add turns to the countdown.
- Cluster the Targets: If multiple enemies are charging attacks, use Garl's Hurl or the Soonshroom combo to pull them together before launching area skills like Zale's Sunball or Valere's Crescent Wave.
- Spend Combo Points First: Fire high-coverage combos like Solstice Strike early in the lock sequence. This preserves individual character MP for targeted single-lock cleanup.
- Boost Basic Attacks with Live Mana: If a character lacks the MP for a specific spell, have them absorb up to three charges of Live Mana from the floor before using a regular attack. This imbues their standard strike with their innate elemental property, breaking both physical and magical locks without spending MP.

Nice guide. I am checking the other Sea of Stars articles next.
The explanation is clear, especially for beginners.
This guide answered the exact question I had.
This saved me time in the early game.
