To pilot Midrange Abysscraft successfully in Shadowverse: Worlds Beyond, focus on controlling the board and building your cemetery count early, drop Cesar between turns 4 and 6 to absorb pressure and swing tempo, and finish matches with lethal burst between turns 7 and 9.

Unlike pure aggro variants that attempt to empty their hand to win by turn 5 or 6, Midrange Abysscraft relies on sticky followers, resource retention, and efficient trading to outlast opposing removal before setting up two-turn lethal sequences.

How to Play Cesar

Cesar serves as your primary mid-game stabilizer, bridging early board development into your late-game finishers. Playing Cesar during turns 4 through 6 provides three direct advantages:

  • Board Interaction: His presence forces awkward trades, drawing damage and removal spells away from your leader.
  • Defensive Padding: Cesar's stats and defensive utility stop aggressive decks from bypassing your board for direct leader damage.
  • Resource Conservation: He clears multiple small threats through combat, allowing you to hold high-cost removal spells for late-game opposing threats.

Do not drop Cesar onto an empty board if you have lower-cost proactive followers available. Reserve him for turns where your opponent threatens board control, or immediately after an opponent spends an evolution point to push tempo.

Turn-by-Turn Strategy

Turns 1 to 3: Early Setup

Focus on building cemetery count and establishing early board presence.

  • Play low-cost followers that generate tokens or draw cards through Fanfare or Last Words effects.
  • Spend single-target removal on dangerous enemy 2-drops instead of floating unspent play points.
  • When playing first, play strictly on curve to force the opponent to react. When playing second, hold flexible removal to answer their turn 2 and turn 3 followers cleanly.

Turns 4 to 6: Evolution and Tempo Swings

These turns dictate board dominance heading into the late game.

  • If you are trailing on board, evolve Cesar or your primary midrange removal units to clear two enemy threats in a single turn.
  • If you hold board control, evolve sticky followers to apply chip damage, forcing your opponent into defensive responses.
  • Monitor your leader health closely against burst-damage classes like Dragoncraft and Forestcraft; avoid taking unnecessary self-damage unless you hold immediate healing options.

Turns 7 and Later: Setting Up Lethal

Shift your focus toward closing the match through combined storm followers, burn spells, and cemetery-consuming effects.

  • Set up two-turn lethal sequences rather than overextending into potential board clears.
  • Maintain a defensive Ward follower on the board if the opponent has lethal potential on their upcoming turn.

Evolution and Resource Management

Evolution points are limited, and expending them too early reduces your mid-game flexibility:

  1. Clear Boards with Followers: Rely on follower combat to remove enemy units during the mid-game. Save direct-damage spells in hand to bypass late-game Wards or deliver lethal.
  2. Preserve Your Final Evolution: Do not evolve a unit unless an enemy threat presents immediate lethal or ongoing engine value. Hold your final evolution point for your primary finisher or an emergency clear with Cesar.
  3. Track Cemetery Thresholds: Trade tokens and low-health followers into larger enemy units whenever you need to activate threshold-dependent board clears on following turns.

Matchup Plans

Versus Aggro Decks

Mulligan aggressively for 1-cost and 2-cost defensive units alongside cheap removal. Focus entirely on trading and containing early damage until turn 4 or 5. Once Cesar enters the board, aggressive opponents typically run out of card draw and cannot overcome your restored board presence.

Versus Control and Combo Decks

Assume the beatdown role immediately. Curve out aggressively and push leader damage before control opponents can assemble their late-game combinations. Build sticky boards that cannot be cleared cleanly by single area-of-effect spells, forcing them to spend play points defensively until you can execute a burst finish by turn 8 or 9.
