New players in Soul Knight should run the default Knight to accumulate gems, then spend those gems to unlock and fully level Alchemist or Costume Prince. These choices eliminate the need for rare weapon drops early on by providing built-in area damage, defensive buffers, or damage-over-time effects.
1. Knight: Free Starter Firepower
Knight requires zero gem investment and provides one of the most forgiving stat spreads in the early game: 7 Health, 6 Shield, and 200 Energy. His passive perk prevents overflow damage from penetrating your health bar when your shield breaks, which shields beginners from sudden deaths in bullet-heavy rooms.
His first skill, Dual Wield, duplicates your active weapon to double your offensive output. This burst is effective against early bosses like Devil's Snare and the Snowman King, melting their health pools before bullet patterns become chaotic. The downside is high resource consumption: Dual Wield drains energy twice as fast. To manage your pool, pair Knight with a zero-cost secondary weapon and pick up energy orbs dropped by champion enemies.
2. Alchemist: Weapon-Independent Area Denial
Alchemist is an inexpensive gem unlock who bypasses reliance on high-tier weapons. His first skill, Poison Flasks, throws three corrosive vials that break into toxic gas puddles. These puddles slow incoming enemies and deal stacking damage over time that ignores standard enemy armor.
Against immobile bosses or dense monster waves, throwing flasks and hiding behind solid walls allows the poison to clear the room safely. Upgrading Alchemist permanently unlocks his innate Poison Immunity buff, negating toxic floor hazards, explosive barrels, and slowing traps found in floor-three biomes. However, Alchemist lacks built-in invulnerability frames, requiring careful positioning behind natural terrain.
3. Assassin: Room-Clearing Skill Chains
Assassin introduces new players to invulnerability timing. His primary ability, Dark Blade, triggers a rapid dash that makes him completely immune to damage and finishes with an enhanced melee strike on contact.
Dark Blade resets immediately upon scoring a kill with the boosted slash, up to four consecutive times. This lets you eliminate entire rooms of standard minions while staying invulnerable. Assassin struggles more against single-target bosses, where the dash cannot execute the target to trigger a reset. In boss fights, treat Dark Blade primarily as a defensive tool to pass through unavoidable projectile walls.
4. Paladin: Maximum Defensive Security
Paladin provides the safest defensive profile for surviving high-damage rooms and transitioning into Badass mode. He carries 9 Shield and 2 base Health. Because shields naturally regenerate after a brief lull in damage, Paladin can absorb repeated mistakes across every chamber.
His first skill, Energy Shield, grants complete damage immunity for a short window while converting all absorbed projectiles into energy. This allows you to fire high-cost weapons without energy depletion while standing directly in enemy fire. His primary risk is his small 2-point health pool. Piercing laser beams, fire pools, or poison clouds that bypass shields will kill Paladin quickly, making elemental resistance perks critical.
5. Costume Prince: High-Health Transformation
Costume Prince is an accessible gem pick for players who prefer straightforward combat without precise dodging. His skill transforms him into the Slime King, replacing your standard health and armor with an independent, temporary health bar.
While transformed, the Slime King absorbs hits without risking your true health pool underneath. The form automatically launches bouncing magical projectiles and triggers ground slams that stun minor targets and clear enemy bullets. The primary limitation is hit box size; the Slime King is much bulkier than standard heroes, making dodging tight projectile patterns impossible. Once the transformation ends, retreat behind cover until the cooldown completes.
Recommended Early Upgrade Priority
Do not split gems evenly across multiple unranked heroes. Invest your first 8,000 to 12,000 gems into raising a single character to 5 or 6 stars. Leveling up grants bonus health and shield points, shortens skill cooldowns, upgrades the character's starting weapon, and unlocks their passive buff.
| Character | Unlock Method | Primary Role | Key Advantage | Main Drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Knight | Free Starter | Burst DPS | Doubled weapon firepower; forgiving base stats | Rapid energy depletion |
| Alchemist | Gem Unlock | Area Denial | High poison damage without weapon reliance | No invulnerability skills |
| Assassin | Gem Unlock | Wave Clear | Resets invulnerability dash up to 4 times on kill | Lower single-target boss burst |
| Paladin | Paid Unlock | Defense / Tank | Absorbs attacks and converts bullets to energy | Vulnerable to shield-bypassing hazards |
| Costume Prince | Gem Unlock | Brawler / Bruiser | Independent health pool with radial stuns | Large hit box and low agility |
For a standard progression route, clear early dungeons with Knight to gather your starting currency. Put those funds toward Alchemist for safe ranged clears or Costume Prince for extra room survivability, maxing their star rank before buying alternative heroes.
